I've been wanting to install a rotisserie unit on either my UDS or Weber Performer. Which do you think would be the better choice to use a rotisserie with, and pros and cons of each?

I have 1/2 of a donor drum, which I can easily use as a sleeve on my UDS for a fraction of the cost the Weber rotiss units costs.

With the Weber, it's easier to cook with higher temps, so I'm a little torn.

Thanks in advance!

I say you start with the UDS rotisserie since the cost is so lower. Then if you are not happy with that, you can invest in a Weber ring. I assume most of the parts will be compatible. Just my thoughts.

Cheers,
Nate

I did the mod on my UDS and use it often for tri tips and standing rib roasts. Good stuff. Of course, im not going to comment without showing you pics:)

I took the complete setup off my gasser

I then notched out two U's or you can use a V(im not to partial to which letter you use) for the rod to sit in.

Im sure you can use a partial drum to bring the height up, but i dont see that as being necessary. I use foil to over lap the holes when i do regular smokes.

This was before i welded the weber lid to the original drum lid and cut out the center. I think it works quite well.

I'm with those guys. Try the drum rotisserie first. I have both the Weber and a drum ring and both work well. As to higher temps in the kettle, true that. If you leave the cover off the drum though, a raging hot fire will ensue.
A couple pics for your viewing pleasure.

My weber ring fits on my drum so I can do either but I typically use it on my kettle so its more indirect cooking even though on the drum its plenty high off the coals

Neat ideas!:clap2: Have been thinking about this mod for some time.

Does the ribolator come with rotisserie equipment? Also, if I did buy the weber ring, would the ribolator fit both the weber kettle and the uds?

Thanks!

The Rib-o-Lator does not come with any of the rotisserie parts. Just the 4 shelves and the two end supports. You can pick up the motor and other parts at a BBQ store so they are easy to get. The Rib-o-Lator comes in two sizes. The original one like I have will fit in a drum. There is a new, slightly shorter version, for the Weber Kettle.

Use my Weber ring on both kettle and UDS with the "new" version of ROL for 22.5" grills.

The rotisserie ring fits very well on the drum...thanks, in part, to the patented swamprb kettle flange mod (top of donor kettle cut and inserted inside the drum). Suprfast has the same thing in his pics....helps the Weber lit fit perfectly as well.

You'll need a spit rod and motor for the Rib O Lator. You purchase seperately, or I beleive you can order from the ROL site.

I have a Weber kettle on steroids by Masterbuilt and a UDS. I cut a 55-gallon drum into thirds to make extension rings. The rings are notched and brackets are attached for rotisseries since these pictures were taken.

I have both, however I have only used the ring on the Drum. Mostly because I'm always smoking, and I only grill on my Kettle.

Mine works beautifully. Below are pix of a chicken and then a turkey. Saving my pennies now for a ROL. Hope this helps.

By the way, my ring doesn't seal well to my drum. Mine has the bottom cut out and the lid/ rolled lip side is my bottom. I correct this for now with Aluminum foil. Really only needed on windy days.

Thanks for all your responses! I suppose another benefit of using the drum and donor sleeve is I can place a drip pan on the grate if I don't want all the juices dripping on my coals...

Yup, good advice.

If you plan on dual purposing it I would get the new slightly smaller ROL made for the kettle. It's the same 5" wide but it's 16.5" long vs. 18" for the full sized one.

Even with the 16.5", you'll have more useable cooking space than ever before on a kettle. 330 sq/in I think it is...

swamprb's mod is awesome! Nice tight fit.

You can pick a nice battery opperated rotis motor too!

Go with a rotisserie ring.

Been there, done that and have the tattoo to prove it!

Threading a spit rod through a drum is a major PITA, If you plan to use the Rib-O-Lator, balancing is essential.

Here's my next question:

Does the Weber ring come with the motor, weight, bracket etc?

I might have figured out what the wifey can get me for my birthday...
