• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Brethren,

I need your opinion. In about 10 days I will receive my long awaited Klose MasterChef with 1/2" firebox, charcoal basket, drain valve and extra wide (30") vertical smoke chamber. I'm gonna go out on a limb and project that I will probably prefer cooking on the Klose to my current setup, which is a Chinese 'Dera with custom charcoal basket and "standard" baffle. Assuming that will be the case, and bearing in mind my New Years' resolution to clear out the garage, basement, deck, etc. I think the most logical thing to do is to find a new home for the Bandera. Here are my questions:

1. Any reason not to retire the Bandera?

2. Any suggestions on how to find a deserving home for this guy? I have had a lot of fun learning with him, and with the mods I have made, he's a pretty good smoker. I would ideally like for somebody else to have the same fun learning the craft that I did.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts.

I haven't cooked on my Bandera since I got my good-one. right now it's collecting dust (and rust) under the deck. I just can't seem to let it go...

Smokin' Badger,

My thoughts exactly!
Well said.

I hope I have found a new loving home for the StudeDera.
I know that when the FEC arrives, she feel neglected.

Life goes on!

I kept mine until I gave it to someone i trusted would use it and take care of it.

its a good second smoker for when u want to fiddle.. The dera is much more theraputic(read labor intensive) than the klose.. ya may enjpoy it once in a while..

otherwise.. find it a home.. but NEVER throw it out.. thats abandonment.

If you end up deciding to let it go, how about finding a Boy Scout troop and spend a weekend with them teaching them how to use it, and then donate it to them at the end of the weekend.

Great idea !!!!
I agree never,never, never...throw out a 'dera!!!

When I got my Gator Pit I "loaned" my Bandera to my brother indefinitely. There was no way I was going to get rid of it. I still remember the very first time I cooked ribs with it. At the time, they were the best ribs I had ever tasted in my life.

I really like earlier ideas of taking time to identify a deserving group of young people or a church group who will appreciate real BBQ seriously and enjoy many hours with your capable (mods) Dera. My first long Dera cook ... helped step-by-step by many Brethren ... is my most memorable by far.
It seems so likely you will want to cook and learn at every chance with your new Klose, that the Dera will go unused when it could be smokin' away and makin' great Q for lots of happy people.

No matter what you choose ... congrats on your new Klose lots of great cooks in the New Year!

Gave mine to my wife's niece and hubby. They have a porch with cover, it has been used and well taken care of out of the weather.

splurge on a can of high temp paint and put it on craigs list, some good soul will buy it.

I like the donation to the Boy Scouts idea. If theres no one else to bequeath it to, then I'd do the craigslist thing.
Either way, it deserves a home, and believe me if I saw one used in my area for a good deal I'd buy it for sure.

I will PM my address so that you can ship it to one of your fellow bretheren!

I tend to like the Boy Scout idea myself...
