Hey Guys,

We just got back from TX and found REAL NB Bandera's at Academy in Austin!
They must have a "deep and slow" supply chain.
I just paid $298 for a defectiive Charbroil here in FL.
My saga on that "buy" is in a different thread here.
The real thing is $198 at Academy on Hwy 183 north.
I came within a "wallet reach" of buying a spare/2nd one--but could not justify it even to myself, let alone to the wifey.
They have 2 assembled Banderas on display and one in a box.
The clerk checked the computer and found 2 or 3 Banderas at all the Academy stores in Austin. Computer alleged that all of them were the real thing, not CharBroil. Time will tell on that.

So, If you want the real thing--it is still out there!

Side note- had "Rudy's BBQ" in Austin. Good stuff!!!!!!!!

Did you grab a bottle of 'Sause'? Let me know when you might be in Austin again and I'll suggest a few other places within 45 minutes that will put Rudy's to shame. :D

What places in Austin do you think are better? I grew up in Austin and consider Rudy's at the top of the list.

Actually, Dickys was on the schedule while we stayed with my other son in Dallas.
However, I had brought a cooler full of my Q transported frozen in vacumn bags. My son and his wife took a "sample" and decided to eat at home.
Made me feel really good till I remembered that we are all just "cheap".

Plan to do Dickey's in September.

Side story--this son has a smoker rusting away on his porch. Given to him by his Mom and Stepdad. Looks just like a Kruse Backyard model, but not as heavy. Still very nice one, except for neglect.
He had tried some Q, but with little success.
We spent hours talking technique and I put "Bandera 101" on his desktop for him.
He is hooked!!!!
I expect him to join in here one of these days. Anouther Brother/Son coming.

Most of the places I had in mind weren't in Austin proper. Salt Lick, road trip to Lockhart for Black's, or Kreuz Market. Elgin for Southside Market.

Within Austin Ruby's isn't bad, but it's hit and miss the last couple of times
I've been there. John Mueller's on Manor Rd., get there early before they are sold out. Artz Rib House if I want ribs rather than brisket.

That being said, Rudy's turns out a fine product and I stop by and grab lunch now and then with no regrets. Really like their 'sause', even though I don't like sauces in general and usually have at least one bottle in the house.

My niece brought me a bottle of "sause" on her last visit here - guess I oughtta open in up and give it a try, huh?

Noteable Austin BBQ

Ruby's on 29th is really good, but the "alternative" staff can be hit or miss. They also make a great bowl of gumbo.

The Pit on Burnet is good and cheap. I think its the last one standing

Bert's on Far West is solid and dependable.

Myer's in Manor is very good and they make four star fatties, smoked or raw.

PokeJoe's is surprisingly good on 5th, but mediocre in Round Rock

Mann's on Research at Ohlen is always very good. Lots of good sides, too.

Iron Works on 2nd is a classic

I also agree with all Jorge's area picks

God I love being back in Texas..

Forgot to add Iron Works to the list. And Green Mesquite on Barton Springs when I get the urge for chopped Brisket sammich. Need to grab some of that sauce the next time I'm by there. It's one of those guilty pleasure things.
