• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I was at a local hunting sports everything store today and stumbled accross a primo kamado [I think I spelled that right] it was 850.00. It stood about three feet tall was in a cradle with casters and had two shelfs one on each side. It was 60% off so you could get it for about 400.00. Is that a good deal I don't no much about that style cooker but it looked well made.

On take on the Primo:

If you’re looking for a unique and highly efficient charcoal grill and smoker combination you should take a serious look at the Primo Ceramic line of cookers. The technology is 3,000 years old, and there is a reason that it has withstood the test of time; it produces outstanding results. By design, it keeps smoked meats moist by requiring very little air flow to maintain smoking temperatures. Want to grill? Open the air vent and get searing temperatures up to 700 degrees that will seal in the juices of your steaks.
A chimney full of lump charcoal will last approximately seven hours while smoking, making it a very low cost method of grilling. An added bonus is that outside temperatures have very little effect on the Primo due to its heavy ceramic design and its dual wall firebox configuration. It is also a very attractive addition to any deck and will certainly catch the eye of your neighbors and friends.
Primos are available in two different sizes, Round and Oval. The Primo Round can smoke a 15-25 pound turkey or a full 15 pounds of ribs, while the Primo Oval can handle a 20-30 pound turkey or 45 pounds of pork shoulder. Both sizes come with the option of a beautiful cypress table with plenty of room for food prep, a plain metal cradle, or a sturdy cradle with either wood or stainless steel side shelves. Other optional features include extended cooking racks and a firebox divider for the Oval, drip pan racks, and pizza stones as well as many other useful accessories.

I have 3 Primo Ovals and a couple Kamados they cook just fine do give you a cooker that can cook low and slow or sear a steak at 800º. I cooked with them in competition and they were supplied by Primo to me at no cost (good deal if you can swing it).
Using the exhaust for temp control is very different than most cookers you would use. HO DE DO posted above the claim by ceramic cookers that they keep meat moist by very little air movement but in reality not over cooking meat keeps it moist and the very little air movement means you are going to use very little wood for smoke. Not saying that it's bad it's just different from most cookers you have cooked on.

$400 for a Kamado is a great deal, if you are like me it has become my cooker of choice for any grilling I have to do.

I would jump on that in a heartbeat. It is the regular round one right? If you were paying full price I would say break the bank on an oval. But $400 with the cradle and tables is unbeatable for either of them.

Thats what I was thinking... I might just get an early christmas present for myself -- err my wife. I have friends I need to visit in Omaha anyway... Where did you find it? If you dont want it, I might!!

..... assuming no major cracks or large chips, that is a terrific deal on a great cooker. I think every bit the equal of my Large BGE. You are in much better shape for any post sale issues than in many locations in the West. Primo has just not made a concerted marketing effort here so not many dealers to fall back on.

I am seriously considering a second BGE and my local dealer can't come close to your deal. I purchased in early May, had my share of 'operator' errors, but now do a darn decent job on anything from bread and pizza to ribs, butts, and all kinds of grilling. You will be astounded at the amount of cooking you can do with a modest amount of lump and a few hardwood chunks.

Post something when you decide.

Regards,

Those Primos are made here in Atlanta, and are the only kamodos made here in the states. The oval is the largest in production, and does address the lack of space inherent to this design. If I could get one for $400, I wouldn't even ask my wife! :)

The XL Big Green Egg actually has a bigger cooking surface than the oval. I'm not sure why they continue to claim otherwise. BTW they've recently begun calling it the XL Oval. Pretty funny.

The round Primo is a blatant egg knockoff but lacks the dealer support. There were some problems with the older ones too so you might want to find out when that one was made.

Yes I am the Big Green Egg spokeschef but the facts is the facts.

Ray,
I haven't cooked on the XL egg, but do you have any pics or comparisons. I guess I should of said that if I could get a Kamado style cooker for $400 I would jump on it!

The XL is a 24" round grid. There's pics and specs all over the net.

Maybe it's because now they have the Jr. Oval?
