• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Ok ...... so after reading Moose's Thread "The BIG Italian Sausage Thin 'n' Crispy Pizza Experiment" I need pizza .... and my own oven. Blackstone has a new oven listed on their site but for $600 . I don't recall the old oven to have been that much, especially on sale.

What is a good alternative oven ? Cooks quickly and is not tiny size pizzas. Guess I could just go over to Moose's house and bring the beer. A lot cheaper than $600. :-D

Mike, the rep from Blackstone told me two years ago they were launching a new and improved version of the oven, but after looking at their site today, I'm not sure what the differences are as it looks identical to the old version, though it may indeed be different.

Do you have a good sized gas oven with a convection feature? If so you can make excellent pizzas in your oven with the right kind of stone. That may be the most economical alternative for you as the Ooni and other similar tabletop ovens only have enough room for an 12 inch pie.


There's also the Pizza Kettle kit for the Weber kettle, but it's a LOT of work to maintain temps and they are not stable for long.

Mike, most pizza stones on the market suck. They don't hold up over time and crack easily.

I did a tutorial some years back on how to make great pizza at home using an oven, and plan on updating it soon as it's now outdated and I've added a lot of improvements. In the meantime, as far as stone goes, get the biggest one that fits in your oven, preferably square. Our oven is a on the smaller side, so we'd have to get a custom cut 17"x17".


The other tool I cannot recommend highly enough is the Super Peel. It makes launching your pie so much easier than just using a regular peel:

A baking steel is now a popular substitute for a baking stone. The idea is that the steel conducts heat more efficiently. I don't have a steel, so I can't compare the difference. A steel will cost you quite a bit more, but is worth looking into if you don't mind spending some extra dough(Pun intended):

That said, a commercial grade stone like the ones I suggested will work great, especially if you have a convection feature on your oven.
 
Ive been using a CampChef cooker system for years. i have the pizza oven, small and large BBQ box and iron griddle i use each of these on the 2 burner propane stove. it's really cost effective compared to what other vendors offer and is very versatile. i have the pizza oven on top the stove in the attachment. i've made hundreds of great pizzas. i can also use the 2 burner stove to cook almost anything. look at this stuff on their website and compare the prices yourself. good luck

1/4” steel for me...have to adjust time and temps as it transfers heat much quicker, but results are quite good

If you have a Costco nearby, look out for some deals on Camp Chef stoves. I got this one for $129, then I added the pizza oven. Works great and is a multi-tasker.

I use the Uuni Pro. Works great on pizzas and holds my cast iron pan perfectly for seared steaks, veggies, etc. Can use wood, pellets, or gas and it can make medium size pizzas. I don’t worry about the pizza size cause it turns them out in under 2 minutes each depending on how hot I get it. Costs a bit, but love the pizza from it.
 
Yep, check out the uuni (or ooni), I got the uuni 3 (second hand) and it works fine.
Takes about 90 seconds or so per pizza!
 
I cook on the Baking Steel in the oven - there is a post and link to Chowhound a few posts up - it blows away any stone ive ever used (preheat 500+ 2nd shelf from top, then switch to high broil to cook). For outdoors, the Roccbox is awesome; though fits smaller size pies; the Uuni Pro is probably the best bang for the buck IMHO; dramatically better than the Blackstone ovens to me. What I can make at home is better than 95% of restaurants especially for true Neapolitan style pies. Pizzamaking Forums have more info that you would believe exists on this subject.
 
Any reason not to use a 18X18 inch unglazed porcelain tile from the borg? All of about $5.
