Do you folks in the colder climates remove your thermometers from your pits? The ones on my Klose only go down to 50 degrees. I remove them and install pipe plugs. They sit in an aluminum box in the house. That way they dont get messed up. Just curious here.

xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I have a Trend in my homemade smoker and have not taken it out for 3 years now. I have not tested it to see if this has had an effect. To test if your thermometer is accurate, suspend the probe in boiling water and see if it stops at 212 degrees. I will test my thermometer to see what I come up with and report back.

I usually remove mine when traveling - but have never done so for the winter... but I cook alot in the winter too... I dont think it has ever effected the coil on the thermometer. it will just scroll on back to the peg and stay there.
I test mine a couple times a year. Traveling is what screws it up. Best to take it out before hauling the smoker somewhere. Although if I'm hauling it somewhere I'm probably cooking for more than just family so I should recalibrate it anyway.

I too had never given it much thought and it sounds to me like a good idea.
After this Saturday's cook, I'm gonna take mine out, clean it up a bit and test it for accuracy.

This sounds like a great idea, I call the manufactuer of the ones that are in my pit, they say no need to remove when traveling, but it sounds like a great Idea, the tel-true's I have do not a way to calibrate them. so it makes no difference to me.

Just a heads up here. Per Dave Klose when he delivered my mobile to my home. Always pull your thermometers as they can only go down to 50 degrees. The ones that came with my pit. Total of 4 arent recalibratible...sp? Temps any colder than that can muck them up. Well at about $40 dollars apiece. Dave also told me that the temps above 50 degrees make them go up, ie bimetal componets will aslo muck them up when temps go below 50 degrees. Only makes sense to me. Economic sense tells me to pull them and I store them in a foamlined aluminum case. They come into the house. I put pipe plugs in where they fit. That keeps them little mice critters outta my pit. I really despise them little farks gettin into an area where I will place food. Thanks for the responses.
P.S. I check my themometers each spring and fall with ice water and boiling water also. Same as my hand held units just to make sure their very close to being true.

It is 27f here right now in south dakota not cold but chilly.
man,thats colder than my freezer.if it goes below 50f here. were adding all the blankets we have. and maybe it would even be a good day to stay home from work.and lite the pit and keep warm..scottd said:
