Our kitchen is totally demolished, so we have been living in the front of the house and struggling through the fun of a remodel. The kitchen and deck will be great when it's finished and it's a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. It gives me plenty of excuse to fire up the grill (the grill and the camp stove are the only thing between us and starvation.)

Had some fun with some favorites for the kids today. All part of the master plan for the sausage throwdown.

The raw ingredients (note, I did my wife a favor and cleaned the beer out of the refrigerator).

I pinched the crescent dough together to make a rectangle and rolled up some Hebrew Nationals with some Texas BBQ Rub just in case.

I dropped 'em in the Dutch Oven and cooked them about 25m at 350ish.

Checked them at 15m and turned the Dutch Oven 90 and 90 to avoid hot spots.

I made up some sliders to go with the dogs and cooked them up on my Smokey Joe while the dogs were finishing up.

I made an adult version by precooking some Habanero-Green Chile Sausage on my mini-WSM.

I used French Bread dough for the adult version and the crunchiness of the bread worked well with the heartier sausages.

At the end of the day, I got the coveted seal of approval!

Enjoy your weekend - Happy Father's Day to all.

My cardiologist would kill me, but, those may be the most delicious thing (other than BBQ Grail's dogs) that I have seen on here. Certainly those kids look like they enjoyed it a lot.

Great idea!

We usually have sausages or hot dogs for dinner one night in fishing camp. I'll be trying out your method - I'm sure those pigs in blankets will be a big hit. :clap2:

That looks great!

What is your dutch oven stand? Almost looks like a wash tub, but not quite. I am just getting into dutch oven cooking some as well and going to make/find/buy some kind of stand. Yours looks like it would work well on my concrete deck.

that looks like the coal pan out of an ECB.

As Jimmy said, that's a coal pan out of an ECB that I scavenged from my dad's house. It works great on my wooden deck and on the concrete patio. Wish I thought of it earlier.

Thanks, HighQ, for this idea. I made some of these on the 4th. I used crescent rolls for some and garlic breadstick dough for some others. I wrapped the breadstick dough ribbon style around the sausages. Worked like a champ. :-D

Made one mistake - left them in the dutch ovens for about 30 minutes when I took them off the coals. The stored heat slightly burned the bottom of the bread. Note to self - take them out of the oven immediately when the bread is done. The children ate them anyway.

Nice job!! Love the kids! question... does the dogs get hot enough?, in the little time it takes to cook the dough?

I cooked them at about 350 and it took 30m (ish) to get some good color on the biscuit dough. The dogs were nice and warm and held their heat for a while after serving. Give it a go - easy recipe and a big hit.
