• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Anybody shop there? They just opened one in NYC and wanted to know if it was a worthwhile stop

I've been ordering from them via catalog for years - great variety, all good stuff.
I was also very pleased to see the NYC store. The only problem is that the space is too small. They are in the Grand Central Market, so not everything may be in stock in the quantities you may want. We're fond of a particular type of pepper - we usually buy it by the pound, but they only had the small jars. It's okay if you're in a pinch, but if you want quantity, get the catalog. Or...they are supposed to opening a store in Huntington soon. I imagine that will be larger and better stocked (and closer to you too...)

My brother's bought from them for years and be bought me a box full of their stuff which I really like. Quality is high.

Penzey's and Pendery's are both excellent. I would make a trip over to the Penzey's store, even if you wind up will sampler quantities, you will be able to evaluate the freshness. Pendery's are the folks I buy my ground chilies from, not chili powder blends, individual grinds. They are a chili-heads dream.

Where in NYC did they open up?

There is one here in the KCMO area - actually in Overland Park, Ks. Very good and VERY fresh spices.

I get some spices there. at times Prices are high but so is the quality. I have had some that were not very good though.

Penzey's is great mail order and a good deal if you set up a wholesale account with them. (I assume they still do this, we did with our restaurant about 8 years ago). Otherwise, I have found them overpriced and their retail stores are, well, for the mall crowd.

Their catalog is a very interesting read. Gives you the history behind the spices and a geography lesson too!

One of my favorite tips from the catalog "some sources suggest replacing ground spices every 6 months. Many spices are harvested annually." Uhm, yeah. Whenever possible I try to buy whole spices and grind my own as needed.

Yeah worth a stop but be prepared to drop some bucks. good quality stuff but tad on pricey side. Going there for me, is like going to Sam's club- I go in for a big box of toilet paper and come out $200 poorer with a whole cart full of chit!

I think www.spicebarn.com has better prices with quality being pretty good too.

Oddly enough, I stumbled across one in Memphis yesterday and loaded up on some really great stuff like ground celery seed and toasted garlic. Not a bad deal if you buy it in bags instead of bottles. You can get roughly twice as much for the same price.

Just got a $5 off coupon in the mail today for the new Penzeys in Huntington Station, so I'm guessing they must be open now. Address is 326 Walt Whitman Road, which either puts them in the mall or the shopping center where the rapidly closing Tower Records is....I'm so happy I could have a pepper attack.
