I love using pecan for smoking pork. I'm doing a cook for my fellow truck drivers in September for Truck Driver Appreciation Week (yeah, that's a thing).

Will smoking meat with pecan wood trigger someone's nut allergy? I always worry about that when I cook for a crowd.

That sounds like something that needs to be answered by a medical professional.

Not sure, but hickory and pecan are in the same family and both produce nuts, oak produces a nut as well. Maybe plan on cooking with fruit wood or mesquite until you get a definite answer.

Most people are allergic to peanuts, and peanuts grow in the ground so they are actually a legume, not even related to, or in the same family as tree nuts. Without going and digging up my old texts from nutrition class and food safety I recall that peanut allergies are roughly 10 to 1 to other nut allergies, and other nut allergies are usually referenced to oils and butters/spreads which are concentrated forms of tree nuts.

Now that my brain hurts from recalling things that are covered in spider webs I would have to say there would be a very, very thin chance of any chemical makeup relating to the nut of a tree ever making it into the smoke of the wood. It is an extremely dangerous situation with the allergins and can be life ending situation and you have really got me thinking about this. I know many people use nut oils on their meat prior to smoking, cooking and I must say I have never given it a thought, but I also have never seen an issue with judges, or consumers having a reaction, and I am sure that some must have nut allergies.

Interesting question for sure, and I have contact with a few chef/proffessors here at the local college culinary program and I will pose this question the next time I see them.

As a physician I always tell my patients that they COULD be the first person in the whole world to react to a particular substance but I am unaware of any reports of nut allergies from a wood smoke exposure.

Many, like me, are severely allergic to nuts but not the kind that grow on trees.
Only the ones walking the steets and breathing air cause severe reactions!!:boxing:
On a serious note; I've never heard of anyone having a medical reaction from BBQ smoke. I believe we would see warnings at every BBQ restaurant in the country if it was a problem.

I have never heard of such a thing with smoked foods and if there was BBQ restaurants would have warning signs everywhere and they do not , I think your safe .

I'm with thunder, a peanut isn't a nut at all, it's a bean.

I can't see anyone having a reaction to the smoke.

So I apologize for a minor Hijack here. Since a peanut is not a nut but a legume.....if you are allergice to peanuts are also allergic to beans? Allergies are so weird. I am allergice to Scallops and Clams but not other shellfish. Maybe I just answered my own question.

My daughter is allergic to Pecan nuts. She has no problem with Pecan smoked food.
