• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Had a late night romp in the supermarket last night. Meat section had "osterich steaks". Claims to be better a "Beef than Beef". I wont even entertain that notion. But i was considering giving it a shot out of curiousity. Cooking directions said use any beef recipe, but cut time in 1/3. Was expecting a poultry looking thing, but meat was deep red and very firm. Anyone every try it?

I've had Osterich Burgers. Tastes like beef to me but a lot less fat so less shrinkage. Haven't had a steak though. I have had Emu though. Kinda like Filet Mignon.

I've had ostrich steak in a good restaurant in the Seattle area.

You would not belive the stuff. It's farking poultry, right? Think again. It's deep and red like Phil said, but the real weird thing was when the waitress asked me if I wanted it medium rare, medium...

The texture was just like a good beef steak, but the taste wasn't. It was danged fine. I recommend it.

If you're going to Q it you MUST add some fat because it's way lean.

Ostrich farms were popular in the early 90's around Austin and I tried it. Considering the cost, I'll take a good cut of beef every time.

Agree, it is very lean and should be treated just like you would a Venison Tenderloin or cutlets. Either a fast sear in a pan or a quick touch on the grill is all you need. Once overcooked the meat turns very stringy and fast, be careful with it being it is not that cheap.

I typically ran Ostrich on my Fall and Winter menus because of it's hardy, lean, gamy type of feel, and taste--not that gamy is a bad thing, but would be on a Spring or Summer menu.

Osterich is good stuff. Only had it in restaurants, but reminds me of a good fillet mignon. Never cooked it -but i think i'd cook it over direct high heat - sear the outside and cook quick.

Thanks guys.. I will try it.. It was 4.99 for what looked like an 8-10 ounce steak. Package said its very lean and not to overcook. So figure i'll try one on the grill first.

I've had it before it's very good. As stated above it's very lean. I've grilled it before on a gas grill and wouldn't try for anything more cooked than med. rare.

Fudruckers actually offers ostrich burgers which are also pretty good.

Never had it, but that would be one big-ass drumstick

Fred Flintstone Mod ...I wonder if they sell Legs it would cost a fortune probably

It's been on my list of things to try. Have to move it up and do it during the NCAA tournament. Usually do a big cook one day and have a few folks over that I haven't seen for a year or so.

Question for Big Belly. Just started thinking about this a little more. Based on your experience is there a cut I could marinate and grill at high temp that would work for tacos al carbon?

Actually, I have had Ostrich.

Back when I used to visit a supplier in Agoura Hills (pay attention SoCal bros) they used to take us out to eat. Usually it was Gladstones4Fish at Sunset and PCH. That was nice. All the peanuts in shells you can eat plus you get to throw the shells at the suppliers. <sigh...the good ol' days>

But one time we went to Saddle Peak Lodge. That's where I had the Ostrich. It was sliced as an appetizer, quite red and it was so rare (I prefer medium well) that it was difficult to eat. The others had no problem.

So you SoCal bros....you ought to check out Saddle Peak Lodge some time. Gladstones too if you have the time.
