• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

As many of you might remember, late last year, some of the NorCal Brethren put together a little troop feed for the National Guard and Army soldiers at our local base. And I like to think it went very well. During that event, I got to know the local USO Director Jeff Herndon, who felt that the BBQ was the best he had ever had, and that the event was outstanding. Soooo...

Fast forward to earlier this week, and I get tagged by Jeff and asked if we would be willing to jump in on an event they are doing at Camp Roberts, he knew it was a long ways away, so felt that as much as we had done with Camp Parks, he understood if I said no. I said I would check, and Poobah said absolutely, that these things are never going to be no.

Here is the catch...it happens on the weekend of June 14-15, Father's Day, and is a part of a huge event for the National Guard. We will be serving what Jeff is asking to be a BBQ Blowout to 7,700 soldiers. Yes, 7,700 covers. Surrreeee, let me just fire up my UDS.

Now, I am not asking for donations (yet?) and to be honest, feeding at least 7,700 people is not going to be easy. At least, it is just one meal, and not the entire weekend. But, if you are a BBQ Brethren, and you have thought 'I sure would like a chance to be a part of a Troop Feed', well, here is a big chance. Start planning to have that weekend open. I realize that it is Father's Day, but, think of what a great day that could be. Bring Dad, especially if he can cook, or lug meat, or trim meat, or shuttle beers :thumb:...

And if you have a big cooker(s), I sure could use the reassurance of a few of those, rough numbers tells me we will be loading in in excess of 4000 pounds of meat. (I may not have thought this out very well).

I hope I didn't step on any toes here Phil, but, feeling like I want to start the ball rolling sooner rather than later.

From last year:

Imagine this x 30, that many happy faces as you sling Que.

I will discuss with the Keeper of the Schedule and see what that weekend is looking like. Do you know if it's on Saturday or Sunday? Do keep us posted on donations.

If I can make it I'll bring my cooker.

I don't know, the USO has to finalize the scheduling. It will be one of those though. :thumb:

Not sure quite why, but I put it on the calendar; who knows maybe a NorCal/Napa vacation on the front or back?

Bob---I am very familiar with Camp Roberts as I used to live in San Miguel, California----I need to visit that area again. Let me know how I can help--I can tow either my smoker or my towable Santa Maria Pit. I can also cook sides with dutch ovens if needed. I have serving stuff also--chafing trays, etc because I cater. Lemme know what you need.

Camp Roberts is in the middle of the Central Coast, a quick drive to Paso Robles, some of the best wine country in CA that is not called Napa. BTW, also the heart of Santa Maria BBQ country, a quick drive to the Far Western Tavern, the heart beat of Santa Maria steak cooking. Although Jockos is closer and more to my liking.

Great thing you are doing. Makes me almost wish I lived on the left coast. Almost.

Good luck with it. I am sure y'all will do well...

Leonard, good to hear from you, been a while. Of course, I remember you lived down here, I'll make more information known as I can get it arranged.

I have heard that "Far Western Tavern" in Guadalupe, California has closed. Guadalupe, Santa Maria, and Nipomo are slightly over one hour south of San Miguel, California. Morro Bay, Cayucos, Cambria etc on the coast are also one hour or so. This is an awesome area to visit. Camp Roberts is a huge base and is situated on the west side of Hwy 101 near the San Luis Obisbo / Monterrey County line. There is quality pig hunting in this area. Lake San Antonio and Lake Nacimiento are very close to Camp Roberts. There is a very active California Mission in San Miguel, and the lesser known San Antonio Mission is close by also. I plan coming down and then hanging around for a few days.
Bob---keep in mind---when I am not catering I work for a part rental store--- have many things at my disposal if needed--if there is a need for something I can probably get it

Thanks Leonard, the USO is supposed to be out in front, but, it's early in the game
