• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I bought a new unpainted unlined drum. Was told there is no rust inhibitor inside or anything. Do I still need to burn it out? What about intake holes, how many, how high of the bottom? Any other suggestions are appreciated.

No you can just season and cook... BTW before you drill anything I'd consider all your alternatives for a design. Consider doing a Big Poppa kit or their charcoal basket for lots of easy cooking options. They also have ala cart parts.

BTW beautiful drum you got there! It will make a fantastic cooker

i am not sure about the "no rust inhibitor"....it is an organic coating that is baked on and you will not see it....if there was no rust inhibitor, the inside would be rusting itself like crazy. my new barrel looked like yours on the inside but when i burned off my unlined drum and left it for two days without spraying some cooking oil, it started forming surface rust.

i would do a burn myself and after that season right away.

Would charcoal burn it off?

I rented a flamethrower also known as a weed burner....hooked it up to my propane tank and burned it that way on the inside.....alternatively, people do a barrel burnout with loads of wood. I live in a pretty dense neighbourhood with limited backyard space so that was not an option.

Will charcoal do it??? May be but you will need large amounts i reckon.

If it was me I would just season it and get 300 degree charcoal fire going for and hour or so. Then throw some greasy chicken on, to help season it more.
Below is a picture that should give you general idea. I didn't use no diffuser.
Now the fun deciding how you want to build your UDS so many choices

Just to confirm this is a steel drum...if it was stainless steel it wouldn't need a burnout of course.

Where did you source the drum?

Thanks,

Robert

I went ahead and sprayed some water/vinegar solution on the inside, rusted in 5 minutes.

LOL, yea I was gonna say it's straight metal and no "organic" rust inhibitor. Oh well it's nothing that can't now be sanded back out.

It is no biggie...this is a surface rust that can be removed easily....didn't remove the little surface rust in mine.....gets covered up by all the fat and grease anyways. Saves you a great deal of work to burn it out.

Organic here was not referring to something natural. ...it refers to a coating composed of carbon and hydrogen molecules (sorry my chemistry geekiness comes out) :-)
