• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

What do you use to cordon off your area at competitions to keep people from walking thru? Chains? Rope? Fence?

Looking for an economical solution...

I guess maybe I'm in the minority here but I have never had a problem as of yet. Of course my space is usually so full of stuff (canopy, smoker, grill, tables, coolers, van, etc.) that there's probably not enough room for anyone to cut through anyway.

home depot sells white plastic chain link. Same place as the ropes and steel chaing. Comes either in bulk off a reel, or boxed 10-15 foot lengths.

The also have plastic posts to use if ya need to be fancy, but i just wire tie it to various spots, trailer, tent leg, etc..

Same with us

Spectators are getting bolder and bolder. I don't mind talking to folks, infact I enjoy it. But don't come all up in my area if I don't know you and didn't invite you.

A 14" slicing knife and a decent sized piece of oak seems to work!!:-D

We've not had too much problem...most folks tend to use "campground" rules and don't cut through or move into the work area, at least not too often.

Sometimes I've had to use "body language" -- ie. move around people to make them follow me to get away from the cooker or prep area.

I would NOT be too gentle with some fool opening my cooker or reaching for a piece of meat...rude is rude and I don't care if they did pay an entrance fee or parking.

On the other hand, we really don't mind folks walking up and asking questions when we're not in that 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. time period!! We'll even give taste tests if we haven't already packed the leftovers.

I almost cut off a guy's fingers for that. He was just a little too fast...

I know I will catch a bunch of crap but oh well, One thing that I have noticed here in Texas is that if you put rope or fence up in front of your area the people act like cattle and come up or in just to see what you are trying to keep them from looking at? So I use nothing and have yet to have trouble with one exception had a drunk try to open my pit ONCE.

The first year I cooked NKC we were right on the corner of the parade route. The folks next door were laughing at us and we couldn't figure out why. About 7 am the next morning, he came over with some plastic fence (the kind you see around construction sites) and roped off our site and his. I saw why about thirty minutes after the fact. Even with the fence, we had people standing around wanting to watch the parade in our cook site. Some even brought chairs. Most contests do not have parades that run through the contest area, so its not the norm, but the fence worked pretty well. I have some problems at the bigger contests, like the Royal and Lenexa.

 I have had this problem at some of my catering jobs. People try to take food right off the grill, One time I was letting one of my Tri-tips rest on the cutting board next to my cleaver, and as soon as I turned around some jerk from the event grabbed my cleaver and chopped my Tri in half, needless to say I was pissed and the tri dried up like a prune. There has to be something they sell to keep the cooking and preping area clear of jerks:mad:

I'm with Dustaway. If you block off your area TOO much, you will get the "grass is greener" effect going... it's like a magnet! People wonder what is so cool you have to hire security to keep others out.

We never have anything up, and I rarely have any issues. We don't mind talking to folks though, and usually have plenty of folks hanging around. I've never had anyone try to get into my cooker. I do have alot of folks ask if it is a rotisserie, and how many trays, etc. When they see the motor - But never one bold enough to open it.

Some like to watch for when I open it.... some people just like to watch racks spin I guess!

Mista, since you are asking - I take it that your contest goers are bolder out west, and like to be nosey/rude? Someone mentioned the orange fencing... It is good old silt fence. easy to roll up and resuable. Just take some stands to string it across... or run it through your easy up legs, etc.
works like a champ - light weight, easy, but durable.

I put a rope around my area, but leave an open spot on the side I want people to enter from. This way I can set my area up to keep my stuff away from the people unless they enter through the open area. This way I can keep them in front of me where I can see them coming.

Just put the Margarita machine up towards the front of the tent and folks won't get much further. Huh Wayne.

We had a plastic chain across the opening also. You couldn't see the chain when it was open. This 3 canopy setup worked very well for us. Willie B also sold $400 of our rubs to the public that day.

We only close off our area during Crunch Time and only at certain contests. We run a yellow rope and have these signs.

Thats right. We don't normally put anything up - in fact usually invite people in to have a margarita. The exception is at the royal where we put orange snow fencing across the back of our site to keep people from cuttin' through.

I dont compete but I like the idea that Spice uses...give the folks a reason that the area is "Closed" that way they might not get the opinion that they are Not wanted at all..Might be good for "Public Relations"

We dont use any rope either but we do hang ribbons, medals and old competition lanyards (?) all along the outside our EZ-UP's. They will hit people in the head if they try to get in too close, which is amusing to me. We have tables set up around the perimeter too...the dishbins are GREAT for keeping people away. I am all for people watching and/or talking to us. I find that if you tell people that turn-in is in five (or whatever) minutes, usually they will back off and just enjoy the scenery.

I don't ever remember a problem with people coming in or cutting through.
