• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

My Shirley will be built soon.

I am about a month out from build, and have decided on a 24 x 50 Patio model. For those that have them, any must have options. It will be my first Shirley. Been kicking around if I need the insulated firebox or not. (ANd of course like some other recent thread have covered, if I need a bigger one)

I have a 24x50 Shirley and I have found it is plenty big for my home use. I went with a flat-back raised cabinet model.

Things I would recommend/do different:

1) The shelf on the side of the warmer is really handy. I find myself using it a lot.

2) I would possibly nix the warmer, but if you do want it, get the optional block that lets you cut off airflow to the main chamber to make the warmer function like a vertical smoker. The block wasn't available when I got my smoker, so I tend not to cook in the vertical for smaller cooks as I had initially intended.

3) I would nix my probe ports, since I have never used them. I use them in my more "set it and forget it" smokers like the Cookshack and Webers, but the stick burner is a different kind of activity where I am constantly around the smoker, and I cook on it more "by feel" than precise readings.

4) Extra rack positions. I have the extended height on the cabinet. Three shelves is plenty, but I wish I had them put a set of shelf guides between each set of shelves to give me a couple more positioning options.

5) Raised firebox height. You will see that some SFs have a taller warmer with a shorter firebox (close to a 75/25 ratio like mine) while others have a ratio similar to 66/33 or 60/40 if I remember correctly. The later ratio seems to be with the thicker or insulated firebox options. Originally I liked the idea of having more warmer space and less firebox space, but sometimes I think it would be easier to add and arrange the splits in the firebox if I had a little more clearance.

6) I would have looked at getting solid shelves instead of the base shelves so when I pulled out the cooking racks to sauce meat the drippings would land on the shelf and not the landscape rocks.

I live in AZ so I can't really speak to the question of the insulated firebox.

Congrats! The ss shelf on the main cc is great for cleanup. Extra racks and sliders, small shelf on the warmer, umbrella holders, ash pan, that block thing. Insulated fb is expensive but a personal thing.

For me the insulated firebox is a must. MHO...
Warmer with vents from cook chamber and firebox. Super versatile
Probe ports
Stainless shelves in my Meadow Creek are awesome
Get what you want the first time. Never any regrets then.
Keep in mind, this will last a couple lifetimes

What was your lead time on this? Patio models don't have quite the lead time as the bigger ones do they?

As far as the drippings through the shelf. I use butcher paper and picnic table cloth clips. Also, my next cooker will have an insulated firebox. An insulated firebox should prevent rust and be safer if there are small children around.

gtsum..I think I put my deposit down last May or June? Not sure somewhere around that timeframe.
Thanks for the all the inputs..appreciate it.

I 3rd the stainless shelf. I just picked up the exact model (except mine is on a trailer frame) Wish I had gotten the stainless shelf.

I did add a paper towel holder and it is very useful. You are going to love it. This is my first stick burner, I have always cooked on an egg, and I can't wait for the weekend to fire it up.

Thanks, I am definately getting the SS shelf based on the inputs. This is my first stickburner...unless my first smoker back in 2001 a New Braunfels that I never got really working at all counts. I have been a WSM/DRUM and LSG IV guy. Looking forward to this addition. I am leaning towards the insulated firebox too. Anyone ever shipped one to WA state?

Congrats on the upcoming smoker!!

I'm so glad I went with the stainless shelf all the way along(I did the rotated & elevated warmer) and also glad I did the elevated straightback with 3rd shelf. I copied a certain brethren with the fold down shelf-another home run.

Propane burners are a nice addition also:

I also did a raised charcoal grate for better air flow if I want to use the warmer to direct cook wings or thighs or whatever.

Just some things I did.

Wow, thats 1 impressive smoker JimmyR1Rider, considerably larger that what I plan on getting.

Thanks. All of what I did can be added to any size smoker. Doesn't have to be a huge one. I know they've done flip down burners that store like the shelf on my warmer.

Just wanted to let you see up close what each looks like.

Looking forward to seeing your thread after you choose your final list of options and pick yours up.

For the most part, Tyler does all of the fabrication since Paul has a full time job. Paul does a few of the builds and they are normally the smaller ones. With that said, Paul had a few to get done before the holidays and wont be working on anything else until after we get through this time of year.
