So i used my new traeger today this weekend for a pork butt. I will be upgrading to a digital controller instead or the 3 position switch. Smoke ran at 160-180deg, med was 260-280deg. I added tape to the slot across the back and smoke setting went up to 200deg. It will be fine, i guess, when it gets 110 here during the summer. it did go out after about 8hrs cuz the ash snuffed out the fire. It tasted as if it was cooked over fire but could not tell what kind...might have to add a chip box for more flavor....but it was a huge success! i like it

Ash should not put the fire out after only 8 hours. I have a lil Tex and Saturday I cooked some chicken for 2 hours then put two pork butts on for just under 12 hours and it was still going strong.

Keep your eye on eBay for the digital controller. I picked up a new 180 degree one a month ago for $65.

it was freshly cleaned before starting. i had to go from med to smoke to med to keep the temp where i wanted it. The fire went out. It just kept pumping pellets until it was overflowing. i vacuumed it all out and re-fired. what is the difference between the 180 and the 225 controller? is the number how low it will go?

Yes, the 180 has the temp range down to 180 degrees instead of the standard 225 degrees. It is still made by traeger and is supported by them.

I can get mine up to about 455 on high. I had it set at 225 for the pork butts and the temp would go up to around 235 when it dropped pellets in the fire pot.
