• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Moving from Maverick to Thermoworks...which one?

I've had a good run from my ET-32, but the probes go out too frequently and I've had enough of it.

I know the Thermoworks ones don't offer remote capabilities like the Maverick does, but at this point I'm OK with that. I'll just get up and check on it and deal with that part if I know the probes won't die as frequently and that I'll a good consistent true temp reading.

The first one that seems to fit the bill is the ThermaQ

Anyone have any other recommendations? Which probes should I be getting with the ThermaQ? (assuming that it doesn't already come with what I need, or there are better/longer options sold separately)

I bought the Blue Therm Duo (BTD) when I upgraded to the LSG Vertical Offset. Figured if I was going to have a "pro" smoker, I needed a "pro" therm. Unfortunately, my range on the BTD is not as good as the Maverick. The Maverick does not loose signal any where in my house. The BTD loses Bluetooth connectivity to my iPhone half way. I stopped using it and plan to sell it eventually. I am still using my Maverick and waiting on my Meater.

I use only ThermoWorks and have:
Thermopen v3
Thermopen MK4
6 Dots
ThermoQ
BlueTherm Duo
...
...
...
And prob missing a few, but since I use my stuff mainly for Comps, my BlueTherm is perfect.

I have had 2 maverick probes go bad within 6 months. Both of the ones that came with the unit went bad fast. The replacement probed I ordered from amazon seam to be better. I also like the min max temp alarm function on the maverick. It is the only reason I keep buying probes for it. Really like the thermapen I got too

I have the thermaQ with i think its the steakhouse probes. I love it. I keep the grill probe in the grommet on my wsm at all times, when finished i loosely roll it up and use twisty ties to hold it together. I only use the internal probe once in awhile, so i dont leave that in the grommet on the smoker. I've had it for almost a year and no problems, and i wouldnt trade it for nothing. It has a magnet in it so it can stick to your pit, but wsm isnt insulated and it melted the kickstand just enough that i wont do it again. I havent had to change batteries yet either

I have a ThermaQ, BlueTherm Duo and a Maverick 732. I got the ThermaQ to expand the number of probes I could use at a time and later the BTD to replace the Maverick. Unlike most others, I had a very poor experience with the range on the Maverick and had to keep the remote in a window very near the cooker or it would lose the signal. I also had a problem with one replacement probe going bad on the very first cook and that settled it. I haven't tested the range on the BTD but I have yet to lose the signal anywhere in my home with the most distant location being my kitchen about 40' away and not line-of-sight. For me, the major drawbacks of the BTD (beside the price) is that it has a rechargeable battery not replaceable by the operator. It does not have its own charger so you have to charge it with your other electronics though the cable is included. Battery life on a charge is remarkable though. I just did two cooks totaling approx. 20hrs on a single charge. The other thing I find mildly bothersome with the BTD is that the display on the unit displays only one temperature at a time alternating between the two probes every few seconds. The app on your i-thingy displays both simultaneously though and you can set how frequently it updates. The ThermaQ is simply excellent but I find myself using infrequently due to the lack of ability to monitor it remotely though that may change as weather warms and I spend more time outdoors. The Thermoworks are definitely of superior quality if you don't mind paying for it. I bought both in the kits they offer to save a few bucks on accessories. Hope it helps and good luck!

I have a old style ThermaQ and I sprang for the "Meathead" kit. Since then I have added a super fast British Green Racing Thermapen, also older style and a old style Timestick. Now I am trying to think of a justification for something else. Guess you could say I like Thermoworks and am a sucker when they put things on sale or clearance.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Took the plunge and bought the high temp ThermaQ kit. Few extra bucks for 3 day shipping because I need it for Sunday.

I was tempted with the Duo...but I know my phone has crappy Bluetooth range. My headphones start cutting out less than 50 feet away at my office. Plus I don't think I'd like that I have to wait for the display to show me the second temp reading if I'm up close to it. Not to mention the additional cost.

I'll just have to walk up to the ThermaQ every couple of hours at the start of the cook..which is fine for reliable temp readings IMO.

You'll be happy with it. Me personally, i dont mind going out to check on it. It is very reliable. Nice purchase

I have to respectfully disagree. Their probes are crap. Doesn't matter how careful you are.
I've been using the same probes for over 2 years now and haven't had one fail yet, I use the ET-732 for cooks at least 3 times a month if not more, guess I'm lucky.

I have 4 Chef Alarms and 2 Dots. They all work great and I find them to be more accurate and better quality than the Mavericks. Anything Thermoworks makes is top notch!
