Barbecue will keep tavern smokin' long after state ban This establishment is not smoke-free, not as long as barbecue is on the menu. Come April 15, when a state ban on tobacco smoking goes into effect, smoking of the pit barbecue kind will still be permitted.
Welcome to Smokehouse Tavern, where the food is hot, the beer is cold and the music -- yeah, there's live music every Saturday -- is middle-of-the-road.
"Our motto is fun," said co-owner Keith Ulley. "Good times and good food."
All the above and then some was experienced on this recent Saturday. What's the Word, an R&B and soul outfit, lured the crowd onto a makeshift dance floor. The acoustics are just right, making conversations still possible, like this one with Amanda Jones of Blairstown, who took her Texan parents to Smokehouse to experience some down home BBQ.
"It's a good place for families," she said.
Smokehouse is the most recent incarnation of Stumpy's sports bar, housed in the same Route 46 location. The venue reopened Aug. 30 under father-son team Keith and Rich Ulley.
The layout remains relatively the same, the bar front and center and tables all around, the sports theme still intact.
During football season they open on Mondays, serving up free wings and hot dogs at half-time.
The crowd ranges in age from 21 to 70, Keith Ulley said. On this recent Saturday our age radar registered in the 30-plus range. Families, singles and couples mingled with a single purpose: Fun, food and music, order irrelevant.
Speaking of food, Smokehouse also dishes out Italian, seafood, steaks and pasta, in addition to barbecue.
And the music? Join them March 10 for karaoke and March 11 for Filthy Rich and the Poor Boys
