• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Got everything ready this morning to put a little 4.5lb pork butt on the smoker for dinner. Started the coals, cleaned out the ash pan from yesterday's chicken. Even wiped off the cook grate. Then I went into the kitchen to inject and rub it. Got everything out and ready to go when I noticed...

I didn't have any apple juice.

But I did have lots of Monster energy drink. The Monster folks were giving it away by the caseload at a race I went to last month and I've been drinking it ever since. (Not bad...) The green can flavor tastes alot like Martinelli's (carbonated apple juice) so I figured "what the hell" right? It's almost up to foiling temp, so in a few minutes I'll drinch it liberally with liquid energy, shove it back in 'til 200* and see what happens...

Actually, caffeine, just like any other volatile organic hydrocarbon such as capsaicin, is sensitive to heat and breaks down. I think that if he brings the butt up to 200F that a lot of the caffeine will fall apart and not cause any loss of sleep.

Of course, if his family is like my family, they could be the kinds of people who make a pot of coffee to drink while watching the evening news before they go to bed.

My wife drinks coffee in bed, then goes to sleep. I swear we need one of those industrial Bunn cofee makers that holds three pots, when my father and sister in law come over it is ridiculous.
 
I got a bunch of free NOZ energy drink last summer and injected it , made sauces with it and got sauced with it after adding vodka too it. it does give a diff., unique taste to meat
 
i brined a butt in margarita mix many years ago..

turned grey, had a funky taste... but i dont remember gettin drunk. ;)

Outcome....

The monster butt was pretty dang tasty and didn't keep me awake any longer than usual. Sweeter than with regular apple juice, but everyone liked it.

Kinda sorry I went back to the first page to see what I missed, though...
