• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Long...
ive been using the mini wsm off and on and it works great on short cooks but long cooks been having trouble with ash. ive been goign through tin cans (rust) fairly quickly. what is everyone else using to cover the bottom holes so they dont get clogged?

Yours is made with the SJS so you need to do the pet bowl mod... Small SS bowl with holes drilled in the side. Also I'd consider converting it into a gold by drilling 3/4 holes in the side and installing a ball valve.

Oh also you need a charcoal basket if you haven't already...wrap the charcoal grate with expanded steel but not too tall as to not let you grill.

Are you using KBB?
Might want to try lump or an all natural briq. Less ash production.
I use canned chicken breast cans in the ones I made for the kids.

Sounds like kingsford. I use Stubbs in my mini for longer cooks never have an ash problem.

I got tired of ash clogging the bottom vents and the tin can mod was not much better, so I went with 3/4" intake holes that are regulated with ground magnets.

what benefit does the charcoal basket have? cant u fit more briquettes in without it?

Yea, I came up with the can trick long ago. But it didn't take long to find it had limits. So I just moved on to one of my golds and thats that. As to the basket, it just helps control the burn for me. It would be almost necessary if using lump far as I'm concerned.

I just finished my wsm mini about a week ago...and haven't addressed the ash issue yet...saw this thread and stopped by Walmart...they had a 4.25" ss cat dish for 97 cents...bingo!

For a charcoal basket...I bought a short section of gutter guard for less than 5 bucks...cut it...wired together...worked nice on my first shorter cook and should hold enough coal to get 5-6 hours....just a guess.

It allows you to get more air to the charcoal...better burn equals better taste, plus lets the ash fall away easier.

I get 7-8 hr. burning lump in mine. I use a 10 oz. chicken meat can with 8, 1/2" holes drilled in the side as close to the original bottom of the can as I could.
