Friday I went down to Seattle and picked up a drum and brought it back to a friends house and we started a build my UDS. They had the inside stripped and cleaned but the drum place didn`t have the outside done so we got to play with Daves new Air compressor.

Then we dilled and installed 4-3/4 in pipes. Daves neighbor mike was not home so we could use the welder so we called it a day

Today we insterted the post for supporting the racks and dilled for the rack supports and painted it. Dave had told me while I was at work he would stop and grab some expanded metal but had to much else to do so he forgot. Lucky his neighbor Mike came over to check out the project and we told him we just needed to wait to make the basket and mike said he had some scrap metal we could try and make a basket with so here is what we came up with.

tomorrow I will season it and see how the temps run.

I almost forgot Mike builds Rat Rods and is trying to put together a car gathering and wants me to do the BBQ for it so I told him any time since he let me use his welders and gave us the metals. I figure that should be fun.

I have been testing out how to control the heat today. I was shooting for 225 as my target temp I kept over shooting it and would have to close it down and when it got under 200 I would attempt to take it up to 225. Finally after several hour I have gotten it to stick at 220, good enough for me. It surprises me how little the ball valve is open, for those who have a uds, is your ball valve almost closed to maintain low temps?

Good looking drum and yes in the beginning my valve stayed almost shut but the more you cook on it you will find it will even itself out. HAVE FUN

My drum when it's ash empty, with a newly loaded basket of RO lump runs 225 with 1/4 crank on the ball valve.

If I have had 3 or 4 burns on the basket which happens frequently. It gets to the point of the ball valve being 3/4 or 5/8 open. I'm not sure what happens. Lump gets dripped on picks up moisture, ash not letting air flow properly, lump settles and air doesn't flow through as easily, or my drum is just weird.

I just know that if I've cooked 4 times on that basket of lump that I'm going to need to open the ball valve more. But what the heck 16 plus hours on 4 Kgs of lump is pretty freaking amazing to me.

A little off subject, but how do you like your Pro Q?
