Did a cook with mesquite for my dads company party last week. When they asked what I used I told them mesquite and this guy nearly came unglued. He said he read somewhere that mesquite puts of a gas that could make you sick. Of course he wasn't real quiet about stating his opinion.

Anybody ever hear of this????

Nope, not me. I've use Mesquite many times and never got sick or had gas...unless I did'nt count my beans...240. (too farty) always count em to 239.

wood

Never heard of it been smoking with it for years......I gotta alittle tick in the right eye.

Yeah, I think it's from eating to many peppers and not from wood you use.

I heard about the toxins in black locust and not to use it but nothing about mesquite.

I am no fan of mesquite, I think it can leave a bitter/sour taste to the meat, but I have never heard of any toxic affects.

Ask the farking loudmouth that if mesquite is so dangerous, why is it there are restaurants that cook with nothing but mesquite, why does kingsford and others put it in their charcoal?

I used mesquite almost exclusively at first, still my first choice for most cooks but am partial to pecan, hickory and cherry when I can get it. Some folks opine it is too strong and I do not use it much for chicken but to each his/her own.

I am FAR from being an expert on smoking, but I do know that there is a guy here in Texas that refuses to sell wood from a dead tree on the ground. His reasoning is the use of chemicals to kill the mesquite trees. He will only cut a live tree down and season it.

If I can find the link again, I will post it.

Yeah, what he said. Maybe that's why you were cookin and not him.

Probably the same guy who says that fat dripping and smoking will kill you too. I would have had to leave the room.

Well, I found it just after I sent the post...

Taken from http://www.bbqblanton.com/woodtruck.htm > "Why No Dead Trees"

FROM THE EARLY 1960'S UP TO 1985 TEXAS RANCHERS AND FARMERS USED 245T (AGENT ORANGE) TO KILL THERE MESQUITE TREES. AFTER 1985 245T (AGENT ORANGE) WAS OUTLAWED. RANCHERS AND FARMERS THEN BEGAN USING 24D TO KILL THE MESQUITES TREES. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF STANDING DEAD MESQUITE TREES IN TEXAS THAT WERE KILLED WITH 24D OR 245T (AGENT ORANGE). THEREFORE FROM NOV. 19, 1998 THE DAY I STARTED THIS COMPANY I MADE IT MY POLICY NOT TO CUT AND SHIP ANY WOOD THAT COMES FROM A DEAD TREE WEATHER IT BE MESQUITE, PECAN OR LIVE OAK. SO I CAN CERTIFY TOO YOU THAT BLANTON'S MESQUITE WOODS WOOD PRODUCTS WEATHER IT BE LOGS, CHUNKS, MINI LOGS, PRO LOGS OR STACKS ARE FREE OF ANY 24D-245T AND ANY OTHER AGENTS. I PERSONALLY INSPECT EVERY STACK OF WOOD CUT FOR BLANTON'S MESQUITE WOOD WEATHER IT BE DELIVERED TO MY YARD OR SHIPPED ON A TRUCK. I BBQ FOR MY FAMILY WITH THE SAME WOOD I SELL TO THE PUBLIC.

Are we also talking natural lump ??

.... OR just stick burners ?? I have a great local source for Sonoran Mesquite lump and like to use it especially for high heat cooks like searing steaks and pizza. Are these issues also being discussed regarding Mesquite lump ?

I was warned earlier this year by a Brethren about my Pecan prunings and potentially bad results due to spraying and airborne polutants in the bark. He suggested 'pre-burning' this stuff. Seems like that should work for Mesquite (no matter how it got on the ground) and also Mesquite lump. ????

I use mesquite for beef and have had no problems.

As an added bonus though, the third addition to my war bag is getting bigger.

with the exception of a little deja vu, I can honestly say, I've had no ill effects from using mesquite.

I grew up in Texas where everybody burned mesquite in their pits. I've burned mesquite lump forever and other than that third eye thing I've got going on, no problems on this end.

Never heard of that! The only Gas that was dangerous was probably the Gas it took for him to Belch out that Crap talk. What a Farker. His friggen SUV put out more Dangerous Gasses than the Mesquite.
(Sorry my meds havent kicked in yet, really I'll be fine.:icon_shy )

I swear by Mesquite, it gives a pleasant flavor and literally grows like weeds in Texas. Just like any wood it can be used in excess. That said, it does not give off black smoke, therefore it leaves your meat with a great red/brown color.
It sounds like the farker who made the comment is probably the same butthead that thinks you can still get worms from undercooked pork.
