• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Call me dumb, but I've searched and looked at the roadmap and haven't seen anything specific post concerning meat thermometers. I need to buy one, but I don't have a clue if I should go with a bargain basement model or spend more money on one. Does it really matter? Maybe that's why it's not on the roadmap.

So, to educate me, please let me know if there's an old post I've missed or if you have any suggestions on meat thermometers.

Thank you, and I'll hang up and listen.

I have a set of NuTemp wireless thermometers, which are a godsend!! The website is in the links section. The basic setup is 1 base station, and 1 remote, but the cost of a second remote is neglegible. I use one remote for internal meat temps, and one down the stack hanging at the cooking level. Good luck!

Wow.

I forgot what they look like clean.

The one that stays in the yard has so much crud and grease on it, theres just a smear to see the readout :)

This picture is only a couple of months old. If you were to look at them now you would swear that the original color was charcoal!! The remote on top of the firebox is smoke stained even though it is on a soapstone tile, and shielded by tin foil. The other has been doused too many times in grease, sauce, and beer. However, I am still amazed at how much help these dirty little instuments provide, and I'm sure I will have to order some probes before the year is out.

I hear that.

I need about 6 more probes. I get about 4-6 months out of each one, but I run 2 and 3 at a time.

I have been using the standard probes, but have been wondering about the extended range ones. Do you have a preference?

I tried to get a Nutemp but they were back ordered. I ended up getting a remote one from Linens N Things, it was $39.00. I don't remember the brand off hand (I'm at work now) but it looks real similar and works pretty well. I still want to get a Nutemp eventually though so I can run multiple probes. Getting a remote thermometer was probably the best thing I did to make Q'ing so much easier, no need to keep running outside to see what the temp is doing.

how long ago was the backorder?

Farkin' off mod!!

Old picture, but you get the point. Also, don't mind the Bud as I prefer better, but cannot turn down free booze!

I have not tried the newer probes.

Think Mary has, but he's out delivering Ziti.

If you go to the web site right now it still says they are back ordered. You can enter your email address to be notified when they are back in stock but I haven't been notified yet.

I searched on "meat thermometer" and came back with 1142 matches...none of which pointed me in the right direction...thanks for the tip.

I'm glad to see there is some variety for reasonable prices. The whole wireless deal appeals to my love of techie stuff.

RE: Re: RE: Meat Thermometers

I use a couple of instant reads, and one standard model magnetized to the side of the smoker. Want to get one of the nutemps remote types but money needed for the house first, my needs/wants in the que area take back seat.

RE: Re: RE: Meat Thermometers

About this time last year, Big Lots had nice Acu-Rite digitals for $5.99. Great buy on a basic unit. I have 4 and in a year one probe has gone bad. All 4 therms still work great. Not as handy as remote rigs but priced right.

I usually use one probe for one of each item I'm cooking, if I'm cooking 2 briskets, 2 pork loins and two fatties, one probe in each. In the others I use cheap (but quite accurate) leave in meat therms. The $2.50 ones at wal-mart (also acu-rite) go up past 212 for checking in boiling water. Nice therm, a little bon-ami on a toothbrush and they clean up like new.
I use the digital in the item most likely farther along, when its done I swap the therms, so I can check the leave in on something that's cooling and still be able to check the slower item without opening the pit. Saves a few bucks and a few probe wire tangles too.
A few $2 oven therms to check pit temp at spots are great to have around too, as is a instant reading meat therm.
I "calibrate" all my stuff by consensus. If one gets out of whack with what the others say I pitch it and pick up new one.

I just got one of these for fathers day :D Anybody ever use this brand? They come from circuit city. 39.99 with a $20 rebate.

roknrandy,
That's marketed by Oregon Scientific and is the exact same thing as the Weber. It works fine, I have one. But is only good for meat temp. It's display is limited to 200 degrees F. Not high enough to monitor pit temp. You can flip a switch in the back and change it to C. Then it would go to 200 C. Too much conversion for me. It does do a fine job for meat temp. Light years ahead of sticking a probe in and having to open the door to read it.

Thanks for the info Kevin. I'll try it out in the next few days and see how it works.
