Has anyone cooked with a Lyfe Tyme pit out of Uvalde? Seems to be good construction, but how does it cook? Also, do you have the upright smoker model and how does it cook? Thanks

They make fine smokers. Well made and heavy pipe construction but simple in design, no frills. Last year I visited there shop and they are good group of folks. You can get some custom options if you want a custom touchs made. The gals name is Marsha.

I have a Lyfe tyme. I think it is a great pit. THe only suggestiond I would have for it is to get tuning plates added to it. It really needs them. I'm not sure if they will add them there or not,but I know it wouldn't be a problem to get them added by someone else .

Hey John

Nice pic (you are from my old stompin ground... Pt Arthur). Couldn't tell if you had the smoker upright option. There is a dealer here in town so I haven't called them directly yet. But because of the size and what I've read, I don't think I need it. I don't SLOW smoke anything (their suggestion turkey and ham, I mostly bar bq by definition (Brisket, butts, ribs and chicken).

I'm thinking I would be better off spending money on tuning plates. Your opinion?
THanks

I would definatley get the tuning plates ! ON this pit I think the Upright is a must also. I really like this pit a lot...but those tuning plates would make this thing hum like nobody's buisiness.
By the way my Parents currently live in Port Arthur. Small world!
I would be interested to hear what you decide on the pit...let me know.
ps. Here is a pic that show the upright.

I owned one, a 20" Chuckwagon w/the vertical and cooked on it for 15 years,it was my first "real" smoker and it did a great job in the backyard and several contests.

Would have been nice sometimes to have a convection tube to distribute the heat better lengthwise. If not rotate the meat after probing as it is a bit hotter near the firebox.

My vertical portion was always -75F fron the horizontal, which was fine for resting certain items or hanging sausage & pre-cooked hams for smoking.

Overall, great starter smoker, it will outlast you. Think I paid $850 in 1990,,sold to a buddy for $700 in 2005.
