• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Looking for that silver bullet....

Yorks post about modifying a drum smoker got me to thinking. It seems that we all are guilty of searching for the "next great thing" that will change our luck or incrementally increase our scores. It would seem to me after a few years of doing this BBQ thing, that it is much like Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays shooting, of which I have done a bunch. I've been a AA, 27 yd handicap trap shot and my last time out at sporting clays I shot 95 of 100 - with a borrowed gun.

My point is, I got to that level as a shooter by arduous and consistent practice. Also, when I used to play golf, practice took me from the low 100's to the high 80's. If I hope to get better at BBQ, it will take practice, trial and terror and practice. Not to mention plenty of money for ingredients. I have 2 pits that suits me just fine, so now it's up to me to get my sh*t together.

Sorry for the random rambling....

for me, until i can afford the stumps that i want, i do tinker for fun with my drums, and i did with my chargriller.

Didn't mean any ill will....

We've all started small. I guess my point was more slanted to Jimmy Buffet's line "I've got too much stuff, I can't explain the likes of me". I think I could cook 1 butt as well on my original Brinkman as I can on my FEC, just not as easy.

Why do I say this? Because guys who know their pits, whatever kind they are, can beat those with big $$ with impunity.

My current reading is a historical novel series by Bernard Cornwell about "a" search for the Holy Grail. I have a fascination with history particularly the time period that would have been time of Arthur to about 1500.

I have read many books about the search for the Holy Grail, wether it was the mythical Arthur or the Knights Templar or other the search was what it was all about. Finding the Holy Grail never happened, but someone was always searching. Wether or not the Holy Grail actually exists really isn't important.

Some Kings searched with whole armies of men that were well equiped. Others were small groups or single men who only had a bow and arrow and maybe a half dead horse. The results were always the same.

For us on BBQ Brethren we each have our own holy grail. For me it's the perfect brisket or someone else it might be the perfect sauce or rub. Or the perfect butt. Who knows and who cares.

I love gadgets the more the better. Currently I have enough smoke equipment, but I want a UDS. I'm always thinking that maybe I can't get the perfect brisket on my Bandera (I know who am I kidding). Maybe with a UDS I can. That's just me. I love the search in my own way.

That's what makes this list so good. We are all on own seperate searches for our BBQ holy grail, but we keep in touch with each other and that helps others in their search.

I agree with jbrink in so many ways with his two posts here. It's really all about the search in our own way.

(Wow, that may have been just a little too philosophical for first thing in the morning)

Intellectually,I fully agree with you, financially I more the fully agree with you. But the little boy in me can never have enough toys.

Always looking for that coolness factor. Just like being in Highschool and wanting a better car stereo. Some things you never outgrow.

jbrink, to continue your analogy in reference to golf. Some aspiring golfers will find a set of clubs that work for them, then they will practice until they master the fool sport.:-D
Others are always on the hunt for the next putter, the next driver, the perfect ball [GOLF ball]. They [we] are always changing our grip, adjusting our swing. New Shoes?
Any way the point is we each approch our passion differently.
