Okay, man does not live by smoker alone, or so my wife tells me.
I need a new gas grill. Love my pit, but the wife just wont do wood-n coals, and I need something she can use, if rarely.
I trust the Brethren to steer me to something good. I've had an expensive Kenmore Elite grill a few years ago that cost about $600 and was a POS. I last bought a Chinese stainless grill from BJ's (like Costco) 2 years ago that parts started falling off at 6 months. (did not know it was Chinese till after I got it home, but how bad could it be? Very bad)
People seem to love Weber's. I see a stainless S-320 looks to fit. About $750 -$800. It has the side burner to put a chimney on.
What does the Brethren say?
:ear:

I've got an older Weber Genesis...totally love it.

If it's got a down side, it's that it's boring. Starts every time, heats evenly, completely reliable.

See what I mean...boring. ;)

I've been drooling over Webers Summit line of gassers for a long time now. I was just about to spend my tax return a few years back on the big one when my friend sold me his stainless Charbroil for cheap that has been rock solid for me ever since. I replaced the burners and tents for about $80 and it's been a great grill for those quick weeknight meals. I'll get a Weber Summit when that Charbroil gives me an excuse to buy one. At this rate that's going to be a loooong time from now! Good luck with your search.

I have an EP-310. It will hold 200F steady and reaches 600F. Great for weeknight meals. Bought mine from Rainbow appliance online (don't read into the name, thanks!). Used some coupon code off the net. Shipped, all in, I paid $680 I think. Worth every penny for such reliable, consistent, even heat.

My .02: Don't worry about the stainless outside. Its just an additional pain to clean. Save the extra cash for meat. If you want stainless inside, the P in the model number gives you stainless flavorizer bars and cooking grids for about $50 in price I think. Worth it to me since my last grill's (not a Weber) cooking grids pealed and left crunchy bits in my meat. I just won't trust ceramic coated again. For me its like getting sick after bad chinese food... never again.

Get the Weber. Its worth it.

for a grand or under stick with Weber...the SS units you see at sears, lowes, home depot, sams, etc are not worth the metal they are made of..I have had several in the past years...they look good for awhile, and then they start to pitt out and discolor rather quickly. The SS used on those grills is from China (lesser grade). A true, quality SS grill will set you back around 3k and up (Lynx, Fire Magic, etc). These will be all welded (not held together with screws and bolts) I had a Lynx for a couple years and it certainly outcooked every other gas grill I had before (weber included), but the returns are certainly diminished when you get up there in price (ie a weber is a far better cooking grill then other options in its price range....and the Lynx is certainly better then the weber, but the difference is less pronounced). Get a weber and call it good imo

One other thing...IF I ever had another gasser (doubt that would happen, but you never know?!), I am not sure I would get SS again..it is a b**ch to keep clean - they look fantastic at first, but it takes quite a bit of work to keep them looking sparkling new

A couple of years ago I was too cheap to buy a Weber Genesis - so I bough a cheap Charbroil grill. I have always regretted that decision. If I could do it again it would be a Genesis.

Besides the overall quality the thing that really blows about the Charbroil is that they have their emblem put into the grate - so it's impossible to use the grates to get the diamond pattern on steaks. I can't believe I didn't notice that when I bought the thing!

Sorry if this is hi-jacking the thread, but is there a decent gasser under $500 someone would recommend to a brethren?

I think the Weber Spirit is right around $500 - not as good as the Genesis, but my friend just bought one and he says that he's impressed.

I have a Holland Grill and love it. It is not a hot grill it keeps a steady 300 degree F all day long and guaranteed not to flare up. You can also use it as a steamer. I have had this one for about ten years and the bottom is rusting out so I am going to clone it. http://www.hollandgrill.com/. Mine was the first style they built called the legacy. It is similar to the Heritage they now make.

My advice, Check craigslist for a Weber gasser.

On Long Island, you can generally find one only a few years old and in decent shape for $150 or less.

The only real difference between a new Weber and one that is a couple of years old, is a few hundred dollars!

another vote for weber. you can google and find out which models are still made in US. I'd let that be determining factor. I have a 3 burner "silver" that has been on patio for ten years and other then replacing "flavorizer" bars, it works perfect. never covered. Sometimes I think covering them traps moisture and accelerates deterioration. I have a 2nd one at lake with side burner..it's probably 8 years old and never a prob with it either.

I got a Sonoma by Altima grill from Lowes in November. I was there for the $1 Poinsettias and spent $500 on this grill:

I had never heard of the brand but it was on sale for $500 from $800 and I was really impressed with the construction and features. Thick stainless grills and the "firebox" is lined with fireproof brick so once it's up to temp it is super steady. I have no idea who makes this but it has been great so far.

Weber. Pretty hard to go wrong as long as it puts out 36,000 btu or more.

Under a grand, weber is the way to go...they will outlast and outcook anything in that price range...

disclaimer - I am not a weber homer..I am far from it, but I have owned a couple of them, and I have owned higher end (much more expensive) grills as well that DO cook better then the weber's, but for the price point (500-1000) weber is definitely the way to go for a gasser!:)

Napolean, with the infrared burner and rotiss, Made in Canada. Over a year and it is by far the best grill I have ever owned. If you can go to gas, it is cheaper to operate and propane byproduct is moisture.
