• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I just pulled the trigger on a LSG Insulated Cabinet Smoker. All of my small amount of experience has been on a horizontal offset wood burner so this will be a learning experience.

I am reaching out to all of you for help in not making a mistake getting started. I plan on doing most of my cooking on charcoal and wood chunks, with a BBQ Guru on the box.

If any of you are willing to share you knowledge to keep me from making mistakes with my transition, I am all ears and would be very appreciative of your knowledge and experience.

I am open to all suggestions and tip, and Thank you in advance...

You will get lots of different advice. Everyones got a way, not right or wrong. I have one. The bigger one. If you have the t- plates , I space mine out pretty even maybe a little wider on the intake side so it heats up quicker. I put a layer of charcoal, mostly lump but that's just my preference, then wood chunks then more charcoal. I light the front left side with a torch Open up all intakes and stack and leave door open a little till it gets lit good. If you use water wait till it up to 200+ to add. I use water about half the time. A 25 cfm guru fan will have it up to temp pretty quick. Without a guru my intake is open less than 1/2 and my stack is about that too and it runs 225/250 forever.!! I use charcoal ( stubbs). Some too. Last longer but IMO. It almost becomes a charcoal oven because its so efficent. I like to make it need some air to maintain temp if that makes sense. There's more advice I know. This works for me. It runs great with or without water.

I'm in the same boat (fairly inexperienced with a new insulated cabinet on the way) so I'll be following this thread too.

Congratulations on ordering a fine pit. The learning curve is short for this fine cooker. I've only had my LSG a couple weeks and I can run it like an old pro. Especially with the Guru. Try different fire management techniques until you find what works best for you. I have tried the L method and used the T plates. Neither of those gave me the smoke flavor I wanted. Now I just dump some charcoal in along with a LOT of wood chunks. Probably 60% charcoal and 40% wood. I light it using the Minion method and it works perfectly for me.

Thanks Cheez59 for the information. I will let you know how I do.

Yeah, you are going to love the new cabinet. Welcome to a world where you can do things beside tend a fire. Things like watch the game, yard work, SLEEP!.

I am fairly new to mine too, but she works almost too easily. Check out the thread posted above. Cheez and I have several posts from recent cooks we have done. After reading all that, ask questions...
