• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

hello brethren

I was wondering what the brethren knows about these smokers ? is the quality good for what you pay ? I called them this morning and there Is only a 4 to 5 week wait

Lang

You can't go wrong with a Lang! I have owned one for three years and my only regret is not getting a big enough cooker. Consider what you will be doing with the cooker and get the biggest size you can afford. Remember, you can cook for two as easy as 20 on one of these baby's.

I used to cook on one of my friends Lang 60 from time to time, and loved it.

I see you have a Shirley on order, are you going to sell your Lang ?

Consider this: go try and find a used Lang for sale. They are extremely rare. Once someone cooks on one, they don't seem to ever want to let them go?

They are a mid quality smoker. They are 1/4" steel, but that's where the positives end. They cut lots of corners in production to get the price down. They are "Cheapy" feeling to me. Notice the doors have lock down handles on them to prevent smoke from leaking. If they were quality made, they would not have to have those in the first place. And the little junky Brinkman style butterfly vents drive me nuts. Those are just going to rust up in a matter of time. The grates are junk. They don't even 45* them. They just hit them with a chop saw and butt weld the ends. They don't even cap the corners. It all just scream "lazy" to me. But, that's why they are cheap. You get what you pay for. Lang are not what I would call quality. Gator Pit, Pitmaker, Klose, Shirley, Jambo, Lone Star Grills. Those are quality.

Unless you are local to them and can pick it up in person they're not worth buying. Shipping will raise the price to what you would pay for a much better quality smoker and customer service from Gator Pit, Shirley, Klose, etc.

Unless they were local to me and money was tight, I'd personally scratch them off the list.

Shirley is probably my favorite stick burner out there , but I have a hard time waiting 9 months

I owned a Lang and now I own a Shirley. My personal experience between the two- Shirley. Just my .02, it is worth the wait.

I picked up a used 48 about 3 years ago, for a really FANTASTIC price, and except for the fact that the previous owner threw out the removable shelf, it is perfect for backyard cooking. It lives outside but under a roof year round, gets wiped down with Crisco post cook and is showing no signs of any serious rust. I like it a lot and would get another if I was so inclined or needed more cooking space. Are there companies with better construction/quality control? Of course, but I do not find butt joints to be a problem when it is just ribs, chicken or other meats sitting on the racks cooking away. The cooked product does the talking for me and not simply the welding bead on the smoker itself.

I got lucky and found a used one. Basically saved the shipping cost, which is fine by me. It is well built, but I have seen better. Super simple to use, and turns out some fantastic food. I would buy another in a second. I would add the chargrill and warming box, but other than that i am happy. If you compare them pricewise to Yoder etc they are better priced than comparable companies.

I will probably be wanting one before then , how much do you think you will want for it ?

A lot of people own Lang smokers...and a lot of people love them.
There's lots of Opinions on the net by folks but I've never put as much stock in someone else's opinion as I put on my own experiences...but that's just my opinion!
My Lang is a 2009 and I'm not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon...

Paul & Tyler build an awesome smoker and that's why they have a long waiting list. And they are good people :thumb:

I beg to differ - have owned (3) different sized Langs... enjoyed all of them.
Don't know what folks are saying of mid-range.

Do a search for PGBBQ within the forum... shows how a handful of Langs cooked for Dayton Ohio for several years.

And no... not a Lang commercial - but a very strong coincidence how a bunch of Langs, from 4 different states - converged to do the work for several years.

Over the years, (the last being 2013) models at Dayton were ....
Lang 36 patio, Lang 48 patio, Lang 60 patio, Lang 60 mobile, (2) Lang 84D longneck, and a Lang 84D kitchen.

Just a proven cooker - when pushed to the max, the Lang just keeps cooking without an effort.

I had a Lang back in the day when they got real popular "fuzzy times then" and it cooked awesome, but if you can build a uds to get you through the wait, I would go Shirley they are works of art...I'm getting ready to send a deposit.

If you put a list or spreadsheet together, such as I did with options and such, price wise and quality wise the Shirleys are gonna rise right to the top!

If time is a factor then not so much, best of luck. I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever ends up in your yard!

We got our Lang 84 with chargrill in the mid to late 90's and it has sat outside uncovered since. Nothing has broken or been replaced other than one of the thermometers (glass face cracked from being hit). No broken welds, nothing rusted out, the pinwheels all still turn. Do I wish I paid a little extra to get pretty welds or 45 degree bevels on my grates? Uh NO!

Designs have improved a bit since we got ours and there are a lot more pit makers to choose from, so I can't say Lang is the best value or THE one to get or any absolutes like that. What I can say is after nearly 2 decades, I still have no complaints about how the Lang cooks, it's functionality, its durability, or the quality of food that comes off of it. None. When I see pictures of people's new Shirley's I am happy for them, but in no way jealous.

Langs are built for cooking, not to be pretty. Some of the complaints above are down right laughable unless you plan to polish and show the thing.
