• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Just wanted to publicly rag on myself a little.

I went to krogers yesterday to pick up my normal kingsford competition briquets. Put the last couple bags in my cart and noticed some bags of a product i hadnt seen before, the kingsford professional. Looked at the bag and swapped the 2 competition for the pro. Got home and looked up about it and found out itnis the exact same product re-branded.

I realize this came out six months ago, i have been out of the scene with health issues. But I thought it was kind of funny I went to trouble of putting something back and teplacing it with same thing in a bag with different words on it.

If anyone is curious why I use that product, I like that there is less chemicals in them. I've tried several brands of lump, but they all seem to throw tons of sparks into the air. I have trees and a large wooden deck and it seems way too dangerous when i am using the chimney. The briquets dont seem to do this 1/10th as much.

I picked up a couple bags of the Professional for a rib comp a few weeks back and was really impressed with it. I have been cooking in my kamado so much and burning lump that I hadn't bought briquettes in a while. However I prefer to run briquettes in my WSM so that is how I settle on trying the Professional.

My original intention was to pick up a couple bags of the Competition charcoal but didn't realize it had been rebranded. Managed a 3rd place finish out of 22 teams on ribs and 2nd on chicken that weekend all while having the cleanest fire I have ever had in my WSM. I'm a believer in this stuff!

I use 75% lump but when I do use briquettes I use kingsford comp/pro. They are selling it cheap around these parts trying to clear out the comp label bags so that's been nice.

I still believe in my Royal Oak. I use 2/3 basket of lump for a good coal bed and start it with 2/3 chimney of RO briqs. After a good coal bed is established, I switch over to all wood. I never have sparks, trash and not much ash. I love my Royal Oak.

Thanks for the info. I have used the competition briquettes and loved them. I did not know that the Pro was just relabeled comp. Now I won't mind buying the Professional.

I will use KComp or K professional without hesitation.

I also like Stubbs for the natural briquette route.

To me, the Kingsford is cleaner and you have to add a bit more smoking wood, but my experience with Stubbs is that it gives a bit more smoke flavor (I have chopped a few open and found bits of uncarbonated wood).

I'd use either happily and buy whichever is cheaper.
