• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hi, all, from the frozen north.

We've all heard of the deep south, but not so much of the deep north. Well, that's where I'm writing to you from. Actually, I grew up in the deep, deep south - Puerto Rico, to be exact. Been living in Minneapolis for the past 20 years. I'm happily married, and I'm the proud papa of a boy and a girl. I'm an attorney at the University of MN. I've joined because of the great info AND the great humor here.

I'll be getting a smoker soon, and if I can swing it, it will be a Bandera.

Banderas are hard to come buy in MN - as it was put to me - there is no "market" here for a major distributor to carry 'em. I've been looking at the Bandera's (evil?) twin - the Brinkmann Combination Charcoal Grilll and Smoker. The name rolls right off the tongue, eh? It's sold by Northern Tool and that's a store that is willing to order one for me to pick up.

One the other hand . . . I'm also considering heavy gauge types of smokers - the the Brinkmann Cimarron, or even a Lyfe Tyme - although that's a bit over my prive range. Any feed back on a purchase would be appreciated.

Best,
Luis Bartolomei

Welcome!! Any of the models you named would work just fine. We've got all kinds of smokers and rigs in the group -- I use an ECB (El Cheapo Brinkmann water smoker) and a brand new New Braunfels horizontal smoker (kinda like the Hondo).

The Cimarron is SWEET! However, if you can get the Brinkmann Combo (Bandera clone) at a good price delivered I'd go for it. I like my horizontal but like a lot of guys on the forum I like cooking vertical.

PS: There are times we NEED a lawyer to keep us straight!! :D Or more precisely "on the straight and narrow"

Welcome Brother, Welcome.

It was farking -6 yesterday here, and 4 this morning, but you've probably had that for a month or so now.

Keep warm Brother.

Welcome my new brother. Hope we get a chance to take advantage of some island recipes from you.

I can tell you you have made a good choice. I have only be on a few days myself and already have had some fun and learned too. I noticed Clearwater FL didn't comment on the weather so I won't either. Anyway welcome to the group. Tip: always turn down the sound on your computer before you open anything from these guys. I opened a fart site earlier and I am 99.9% sure my secretary wet herself before I could exit. It has been over 2 hours now and I still hear a muffled sniker now and then.
Again welcome and have a great day. :)

I noticed Clearwater FL didn't comment on the weather so I won't either

OK - I'll admit it! We're freezing our butts off!!! It got down to 47 degrees :D Of course it's mid-60's and clear blue skies.

Cold down here is when it gets near 32 degrees and threatens the strawberry crop -- we've got the Plant City, FL, Strawberry Festival coming up next month.

Welcome Welcome, !!! As you've seeen, you joined in the midst of mayhem, but controlled and entertaining to say the least. As far as smokers, we got all different kinds around here, but the Bandera is our roots. the cimmaron is a great unit and even the silver smoker from Home depot is decent. Like most of us here, I prefer the vertical world, but as a backyard chef owner, I've adapted to horisontal also. Enhjoy our humble abode adn jump right in, seems we're here for the long run.

you joined in the midst of mayhem

Mayhem?? It has been just a zephyr, a mere snot-storm.

Cue'lio will get the wrong impression. We are a friendly group and we work out our differences quietly and with great dignity. (all references to bodily functions, ointments, and parentage are incidental!)

I for one welcome anyone who can, with a straight face, tell me that he's from Puerto Rico and LIVING in Minneapolis, MN, in the WINTER TIME!! I don't think freezers in P.R. get as cold as Minneapolis :D

Good to have another Northerner around. A bandera is a great way to go but Lyfe tyme makes some darn good pits too. And don't rule out a WSM (Weber smokey Mountain.) for $150 bucks at Amazon.com they put out some good "Q".

Welcome Luis:

For cold weather smoking and/or if you have to pay top dollar for smoking wood, ya might also want to check out Walmart, Sams or Costco for a Great Outdoors smoker like Brian and Tommy use.

Here is a recent thread on this brand:

LMAO!!! I'm reborn into the brethren. Thanks, Bill.

I read that post back when I joined and I have some nice typos. I do know the difference between "buy" and "by." Sorry I had to get that off my chest.

I did go ahead and buy the Cimarron, and haven't looked back since. Great little pit. Nice heavy gauge. I pamper it like it was one of my kids. In fact, just this past August I stripped the fire box, re-painted it, oiled the whole thing up and cured it. My "Binky" looks like new.

Since joining, my parents, brothers and their families have all moved south to the DFW TX area. I'm the lone holdout in the frozen tundra. Funny thing is that, without my knowledge, my big brother bought a Dera in TX. He didn't even know that I got heavy into Cue in the past couple of years, nor did he know that I had my own pit.

I went down to visit with my folks this past year and got a chance to play with his pit. It was in a sad, rusty state. But i turned it around with some elbow grease - she looks just fine now. And it turns out a mean brisket.

Happy to be back with my friends.
