• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I'm building a second UDS

Take a look at this pic for me and tell me the best way to go.
My first smoker had a thicker liner and I burned, scraped ,sanded etc. WOW
this barrel has a thinner copper colored finish. It doesn't wipe off. I scratched it to the bare metal so you can see what I'm working with.

Looks like a rust inhibitor. All of mine didn't come off but it was close enough. You'll still have to burn and wire brush ( I like the angle grinder wire brush )

Remember it doesn't have to be perfect.

Doggonit, I'd rather go to the dentist.

Hit it with a scotchbrite pad - if you can get it to bare metal with little to no effort, skip the burn in. If it comes off easily, use a little elbow greas. Scotchbrite it out- then hit it with HOT water and Tide (washing detergent) rinse with clean water. Dry it off quickly and coat with Pam/Cooking spray asap. That mild steel will rust before you can blink. IF you are lucky, your first fire will be to season your brand new cooker. :-D

Honestly -often the first answer you get on this site is "burn the hell out of it". Hey, I like a good fire as much as the next fella- but it might not be called for in your case.

IF the coating does not come off easily? Well- burn the hell out of it.

I will try it in the morning, Thanks

I tryed little sections with my cheap HF gravity sandblaster/Fail. Weed burner/Fail / takes to long and I still have to wire brush it. I settled for dressing up like a spaceman with mask for the Drill Cup Wire Brush/sander/ grinder stripper method. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yup, MUCH rather use a electric powered grinder/wire brush than elbow grease with scotchbrite pad. You go Spaceman! :becky:
