• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Going to get a new axe tomorow. What type is best? I sent mine to MS to relatives, and I need to split some logs now. Getting a hatchet also. So, what kind and where?
Ty

i've always been a fan of big double-bitted jobs.. course i'm just jaded from Cut. pick what feels good in your hands, and good metal that's easily sharpened. sometimes it's easier to buy the head that you want, and get a handle you like, instead of working with what some manufacturer paired together..

I went to Home Depot looking for an axe and came out with a log splitter. Same as an axe but the head has much more of a wedge to it so it splits the log instead of burying the head into the wood. Works pretty good.

I don't know what to tell you. I am using Grandpa's Axe. Of course it has had two new heads and five new handles but it is still Grandpa's Axe.

i use a splitting maul with a 6lb head. Swings like an Ax, but becase its more like a wedge, it makes short work of a log or stump.

I would choose oner that splits wood

I like maul as well.

For a hatchet, see if you can find a fiskars (the folks that make the orange handled scissors). Will sharpen up like a razor (not too bad out of the box) and make short work of trimming sprouts, chopping small branches up etc. Wouldn't trade mine for nothin'.

I always buy Sears. Have a bad problem with breaking tools and it's nice to walk in and get a new one. I've been converting everythiing over to fiberglass handles. Even broke two of them.

I've got both an axe and a log splitting maul - both from Lowe's and they get the job done. Wish I'd gotten the composite handle on the axe - just because the wooden handle gets so beat up. The log splitter has definately helped - a lot. There is also one called the Monster Maul (I think Mark has one) that I'm thinking of buy next year - assuming I round up a another load of oak logs locally.

And yes, I know how to install a new handle! :D I need to do that on my old maul (inherited from Dad - not a lot splitter but gets lots of use as a sledge.

Oh yeah, I now have two 3# wedges - they come in handy with the size of the oak logs I sometimes split.

Gerber makes a handy little hatchet.

I also own a splitting maul. Wood handle does get messed up so go with composite. My next one will be composite too.

got access to any detonation cord?

Ty, I have a two headed axe (brand new) that you can come and get for the taking, but what I recommend is going to Northern tool and getting the all metal cheese wedge style 16 lb maul. Love mine, leave it out in the rain for 3 years now and only the handle shows wear. Makes short work out of splitting wood, and you don't have to maintain an edge on it. Plus if you have kids or grand kids the weight and lack of an edge are safety features.

Picked up a new maul at Home Depot. I might take that axe though.
