OMG - I got my smoker the weekend before Thanksgiving (2005) and have cooked on it every weekend (except 1) since.

My 10 year old daughter and my wife are starting to complain about too much Q!! My older kids are in college and away so they don't complain. I also have an autistic son that only likes french fries, so he doesn't count either.

I have been cooking some great Q, but I guess too much of a good thing.....

I personally can't get enough of good brisket or spares, but appearantly, they have.

What are some alternatives to keep their interests? I frequently grill some steaks on the gas grill, that they love. But I really enjoy doing the smoker thing.

Any ideas or do I need therapy for over intensive BBQ syndrone ??

Have them go to dinner with my OL and daughter. You and I can eat the Q cuz I have similar issues.

Do some fish - salmon in particulary works well on the grill. It's always a good change. Or pizza.

have the neighbors over. They will apreciate the Q if the family does not.

Dakaty, If you're the only one eating Q, it can be hard to eat all the practice you 'd like to get. Sometimes I have to take a cook off to clean the leftovers out of the freezer. Hate not cooking but ya do what you have to, to ensure domestic tranquility.
Some good candidates to widen variety are pork loin, turkey breast (both good for weight/health concious types), brats, italian links (excellent chopped into pasta sauce), meatloaf, stuffed peppers, cabbage and chicken (whole and parts). Chicken is particularly good for variety because it is good with such a wide variety of spices from traditional Q rubs to lemon and herb to buffalo type finishing sauces and glazes.

Ask what your Q weary family members would like yout to try too.

I go thru that often, especially in the summer when its live, eat, and breath BBQ. No pun intended.. if your fmailys like mine, they are sick of smoke.. and brisket, butt, ribs and chicken thighs.

i found that upping the temps to 350 and 'roasting' cuts down on the smoke that they are starting to get tired of, and cook up different stuff now, like whole birds or parts, and better cuts of beef and pork like filet mignons and prime ribs, even top rounds and eye rounds9roast beef) and tritips.... or whole pork loins and crown roasts, or small french racks of lamb. the higher temps gives them some "less smoked' variety. Also, pizza in the smoker is kick ass and you get to smoke up the sausage or ground beef a bit before putting it on..

also, stuffed pablano peppers...., cheese breads, beans,.... whole bass or trout....... go check our recipe section. Our stuff is labeled with BRETHREN at the beginning... theres allot more to BBQ than the basic 4.

Where ya from? I'll help ya eat the stuff.

Basic answer is get a different family.

Seriously, where ya reside at?

Grilled cheese with mayo for crust. Works for me.

Aloha,

Greg Kemp

I was gonna say get a different family too. Hey, maybe we can have Brethren trades... you know... when YOUR family gets tired of BBQ, you ship them off to a Brother who is taking a break from Q for a few weekends and he sends you HIS family who is bitching that he stopped Qing just when they felt they needed a good pork butt! Just another way being a Brethren can improve your life!

Try some one dish meals & go real easy on the smoke to give that brick oven flavor.

thirdeye, that dish in the top pic looks awesome!! Care to share the recipe?

Throw 'em changeups now and again. Chicken, veggies, fish, seafood. Go get you a big, thick recipe book with new ideas in it, and good luck!

We do a shrimp boil, or make up some gumbo, or fry a turkey...etc. We also grill a lot - fish (salmon, of course, and mahi-mahi,), chicken, burgers, occassional steak (hey, I work for the state!!).:-P

Last summer I probably cooked outside, on average, about 4 out of 7 days each week.

Yep, When looking for something to do, I'll read through a recipe book and just pick something that looks interesting. A lot of recipes can be adapted to cooking outside.

We were hearing some murmers about too much Q too. At our house we either smoke, grill or get take out. Seriously. Last June we got a Weber Rotisserie for the 22, now we do all kinds of things, you can skewer or strap almost anything on it and use as much or as little wood as you want. We have done a million whole chickens (all different ways), all kinds of beef and pork roasts, and a Christmas goose which was fantastic. That way you can still mix up the rest of the meal. Drippings aren't too too hard to save...it is winter and gravy is always a big hit. Throw the potatoes/veggies in the coals, and if the kids still aren't too keen on it, tough, you are the parent. They'll eat PB&J or, like I said, pizza. all Q, all the time....

Vegetables are what meat eats.

Seriously, anything you can cook in an oven can be cooked in a pit. It might not be a great idea in some cases (I'm thinking cheesecake, but who knows?) but it can be done. I like the idea of one-dish casserole type stuff. Maybe King's Ranch Chicken Casserole? The first time I smoked meatloaf was because the OL was gritchin' about all the Q- and she was pretty skeptical about smoked meatloaf, too. It turned out awesome, and she shut up. Best day of my life . . .
