Hello,
My name is John and after years of grilling with the Weber Genesis propane grill, tried slow cooking a tri-tip with it using the back burner on high and the front burners off. I got to about 225F on the up front thermometer and the results were definitely juicier than I have ever achieved before.
As you can probably guess, I have started down another road of obsession, one that will probably be greated with more enthusiasm by the wife and kids than home brewing.
I don't know that I necessarily want to smoke things, but slow cooking chickens and beef ribs without flare-ups and burnt edges would be very nice. And, dare I hope, a better Thanksgiving turkey? Not dry on the outside and raw in the middle? I have heard that it is possible but so is Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.
So, the big question is equipment: how should i start? The BGE? The WSM? I do not need to be able to feed a crowd, just our family of five on the weekends. But I am a do-it-yourselfer - seems like you could build a BGE out of chimney flue pipe...
Thanks for any comments and slaps to the head!
