• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Happy Friday!
New to the forum so please excuse my ignorance! Contemplating a Traeger or other pellet grill. Looking for some reviews "maybe a bad thing"- anyway, Happy Father's Day to all Dad's out there and look forward to your comments!

Welcome to the forum. Loooking for info on a Traeger huh?
What are you using now and what do you intend to cook on the new pit?
I have 2 075s and probably can answer some of your concerns.

Welcome

You will like it here. Great bunch of Brethren and Sisteren with a bunch of knowledge... Happy Daddy day to you!

Welcome to the Brethren, I love my country smoker pellet grill, was contemplating a traeger first untill I found the CS line ( Thanks again Plowboy) . The cs is more adjustable then the standard traeger, as well as in my opinion a better built smoker. The final nail though was that they are a couple hundred cheaper then the Traegers. Just my 2 cents.

Already feeling welcome! Thanks to all! I really don't need anything large, was looking at the Lil' Tex. As far as what critter is getting tossed on it hard to say, I purchase beef by the half (only way to go), of course birds etc. But elk, venison, pheasant and anything else I can slay will get thrown on it also!

Buncha pelletheads here. I'm sure you will get more than enough info.

welcome i too came here wanting a treggar then big green egg and now with a ugly drum smoker and love it i saved alot of money after listening to all the people on here

Smokin Newbie- what is the CS line? I see you are from Chandler- graduated from Cortez High in Glendale a long time ago!

cs is country smoker, click on the link in my sig for more details on them. I love mine, super easy to use and turns out great q.

OK then here is some info about Traegers:
They are a good smoker.
They are not a good grill.
Traeger gets too much for their pellets (shipping is a killer).
The Traeger 3 speed controller only has two speeds too hot and too cold.
The digital controller is better and the new revised one is better yet.
Traeger build quality is so-so.
Yes you can load the pellet hopper and go to bed. I have had a few problems but so does any other pit. If the fire goes out it is a big problem you cannot just relight because the thing has been augering pellets for hours and you will experience a BIG fire.
Whatever size you get will be too small.
Traegers like other pits have hot spots but you will learn how to use it.
I have had other pits but the Traegers are easy and do a lot of things right.

I am not at all familiar with the CS line but I do like the idea of the continuously variable pellet feed.

Questions?

Papa Tom, can the speed controller be changed out or not? I can pick one up this weekend for 559, includes the accessory pack (cover, recipe book, portable smoker etc.) what do you think? Of course, the wife has to agree!

Yes the speed controller can be swapped out if you are buying from a dealer ask them about it but make sure you get the latest design.

Can't other manufacturer's pellets be used? There is another dealer selling the Smith & Wesson grills that has pellets by the pallet. About $17 a bag if you buy them separatley ... They want to sell me a S&W (which I guess is made by Traeger) for about the same deal as stated above.
