• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

What is the verdict?? Do you re-use half burnt coals?

I hate to waste and it is just easier sometime to not start clean.

What does MOFO mean??

Depends on how much half burnt coals there are, ow much toruble to get to them, if I feel like recycling or not. Usuaaly I just lite new coals, I will relite half burnt lump if I have some and they are in big enough chunks. Also goes for my wood chunkcs. Every now and then I notice good sized chunks of wood that did not lite during a cook.

I use half-burnt all the time, especially in the kettle grill. After finishing a cook, I just shut down all the vents and the fire dies.
Next time, I just shake out the ashes, start some new lump in a chimney, then dump it in with the old stuff. If nothing else, it makes me feel frugal.

I don't use any half burnt stuff. Start fresh and clean every time. I even use the shop vac to get all the ash out of my firebox.

RE: Re: RE: Half-burnt coals

Half burnts go in the fire starter they work great
Why throw em out?

I let the WSM cool for a day and then put the unburnt KingsFord into a pail.
Use them the next time.
Works fine. No sense in wasting them and easy to keep.
Brush the ashes out to stop rust buildup, PAM the racks, and put away for the next time--soooo easy compared to the Dera

Just my nickle here--no big deal one way or the other to me

I go through a huge ordeal to get the racks and water pans clean... I hate clean up!

waste not want not. I don't get many but when I do get a few I toss them in with the next batch and use them.

wait a minute.

You can just tap the half burnt coals to get the big chunks of ash off, and sweep out the ash pile

in the words of Dale Gribble.... "Burn Is Burn."

most of you guys BUY lump charcoal, which is half-burned splits and chunks anyway, what's wrong with half burned briq?

Ditto ditto ditto

Use half burnt, 3/4 burnt, reuse coals all the time.

RE: half burnt coals

I just looked at this site. I think his logic is that he is trying to coach you through the process like a paint-by-the-numbers routine, so you have to duplicate his process exactly.
He also says use only lump in the WMS, something most of the WMS users do not do.
The only point he made about not using half-burnt coals was the unpredictability.

RE: half burnt coals

Yep, I always shut the unit down tight when I'm done and use what's left in my chimney for the next burn.

RE: half burnt coals

Absolutely! I throw the half-burned briqs in the chimney next time, usually with some fresh stuff, too. And all I use is Kingsford.
