We have a GMG Jim Bowie at work that I'm in charge of. It's a really nice Pellet grill and serves it's purpose for us. The only problem I have with it is that the right side of it away from the hopper has a really hot spot. I've tried moving the grease trays in it to make holes closed and it does not help. Anyone else have this issue and have you made any mods to even it out or just dealing with it?

If you can pm grilla. His dad is a green mountain dealer I believe. He may have heard of this, and by the way his 120 rf homebuild ran at the bash he probably has a fix.

Ive been a dealer almost a year and haven't heard of any fix as of yet. My sales rep has told me the same thing. He says he has heard of people drilling holes, covering holes etc. but no one has an exact fix. In mine if I have it set at 275 the center of the grate will be pretty much spot on, about 260 on the far left and about 300 on the far right. Almost all pits have hot spots and I try to cook accordingly. Do I wish it were even across the entire grill? Absolutely, but until they tell me a fix I use it to my advantage when I can and try to be conscious of it when its a disadvantage by rotating pans etc..

Thanks for your input! I'll be cooking lunch for today and tomorrow on it, doing a Boston butt and a couple rolls of Bologna for about 12 people. I use the hotspot to advantage when I can. Today I'm planning on wrapping the tray in foil to see if helps any.

So far wrapping it with foil seems to be working. I haven't temped it yet, just looking at how all the food is cooking.

Let me know if it works, it would be nice to know for myself and my customers.

I have no issues with my Jim, but have you checked center on the cover over the fire pit?

I made a second grate about 6" above the main grate thinking I would use it as over capacity seating on my Jim Bowie. But I soon realized that it cooked much better on the raised grates than the original main grates.
Very little difference front to back and left to right. Everything I cooked looked the same. No hot spots. Only thing I wish I had done was raise it 4" instead of 6 for more head room.
