• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

A buddy of mine is cutting some hickory chunks for me. Do you guys think there would be a problem using this wood if it's still a little green and not completely dried? A friend would always go cut a hickory limb off a tree, cut it up, and use it that day. Opinions? Thanks!
 
It is perfectly fine.... Get a good hot coal bed ... And add it.... Many bbq joints around here use it all the time on there open brick pits.... I add it to my cooks on my reverse flow smoker..... With excellent results.....
 
Green Hickory is fantastic for low and slow. A lot of old time Q joints that did the 18 hour at 180 would use green hickory. I used to have an in with a couple Q businesses that would sell me their cured hickory for a song they only wanted green.

That being said dried and cured hickory works fantastic for backyard length cooks. You're blessed
 
I use fresh cut all the time and the local BBQ joint does too but you need some good hot coals first like Paul said .
 
And just to emphasize the hot bed that Paul and BBQ Freak spoke of...if you let you bed get to low and add green everything in the smoker will have black soot on it! Ask me how I know? Guilty!
 
IMHO, it depends on what kind of cooker you are using. Should be no problem in an offset with a nice hot fire but I would think the extra moisture would cause it to burn less effectively in a cooker that burns a long chain of charcoal...I.e. A UDS or gravity feed.
