• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Grape wood for smoking?

Hi,

Has anyone used grape wood for smoking?

Long Island has a number of large wineries, is it worth seeing if I can get some wood (no pun intended)? Prunings or clearing or whatever?

Lot of hits with Google on using grape wood for smoking. Everyone seems to recommend it. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, myself.
 
i use it often. the mom in law drops off big bags of the prunings every year from her arbors.

its twigs...kindling...... goes up in flames real fast.. I add it to the firebox with the lid open. Flames up real fast, real high, and dies out quick, then add more till i have somewhat of a coalbed from kindling. It does not last long, and i am not sure what it adds to flavor because its always mixed with cherry.. I really doubt, unless you are in the middle of a orchard, you will have enough for a whole cook... and if u did, you will be tending the fire every 10-15 minutes. thats about how long the coals last.
 
Don't count on it for a whole lot of BTUs, it ain't gonna happen, but it's reall nice on some chicken or pork steaks on the grill....

Ya might try soaking the grape wood in some water for several hours to use it for the smoke, not the heat...Smokey
 
Id go after the old wine barrels... they are Oak and have been soaking in wine for a long time.... the red wine ones are the best.

Mr. Kick has got it going. To me Grape vine clippings are best used for grilling, not in a smoker. Toss some on the hot charcoal just before putting chicken, lamb or pork [in my case-country style ribs] on.
 
I think ThomEmery posted about it awhile ago. I know there are lots of grapes Indio way.

Huh. I never thought of that. Great point! I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I have some grapes growing in the back yard. I'll have to give it a try as well.
 
I have a winery about 10 miles from my house ... I may have to give them a call. (Jordan, I call first dibs)
 
I use my grape prunings for starting fires. Nothing much over 1" dia.
 
I usually snag a truckload full once a year here when a local place is cleaning out their small field (as far as I know it's ornamental). I've liked the subtle flavor I get for chicken and pork as Mr. Kick suggested.

Thillen, you should know the place since it's just a little south of your office on 121. Sometimes they'll even load it up for you right their on the shoulder. Just get them something nice from Hall's.....
