• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Get rid of my Bandera Smoker?

Now if I could only firgure out how to get it to temperture when it is 20 degrees outside.:-D

im sure someone has a picture of how I insulated mine in a pinch..

but after that, i was prepared and wrap a welding blanket around the cook chamber and hold it in place with a pair of bungees.

Build a big enough fire and it shouldn't be an issue. I have had mine fired up with it that cold. Yes, it gets down in the teens and twenties in GA. Thankfully not that often though.

I am glad this place used to be the bandera brethren. That is how i found it, was searching the internet for info on the cooker i had just bought. Good stuff.

Lay a hot water heater blanket over it if you need to. And feed the beast.

I love my Dera. I may add to my pit arsenal over time but I'll keep my Dera and will never part with it.

I have some pretty cool cooking stuff, but my BSKD is still one of my favorites. It was my first real smoker, and I learned to cut my teeth on her. I use the Lang more because of the additional space, but when cooking for just myself and the family, I almost always use the BSKD. With that said, she isn't perfect right out of the box, but with the right mods and a little practice she comes pretty close. And once you have mastered this type of smoker, you can pretty much cook on anything. I can't imagine the day when I have to get rid of her...

Before ya ask, the BKSD is the Brinkman smoke Kink deluxe. its a left handed bandera clone.

Yep and if ur right handed the big problem with those farkers is that you have to learn to hold you adult BBQ beverage with the left hand while Qing:icon_smil:!:

Great thread! Takes us back to where we started from in 2003...Bandera owners looking for ways to modify to get a better cook........yes boys, we were originally the bandera-brethren.com

Yep, when we (Phil) got insulted by yahoo Bandera site founder, it was the best thing that happened to us, some day I WILL get to a BASH you meet you farkers face to face, and I got a lot of face...:icon_bigsmil

D$mn, I just noticed how much my head looks like a BGE, is that a sign from the smoke Gods?:shock::eusa_clap:!:

Duh, looks like I might of had one or two before Pron taken....:icon_sleepy

Kinda, like tonight:icon_shock1: while posting and before as well:!::eek:

But to me, there is nothing like pulling up a stump on a summer afternoon, have a cold(adult) beverage, and tend the fire every hour or so while u mess around the yard. The bandera to me is what I call a therapeutic cooker. Some folks like to read a book, I like to play with a fire and eat the samples all day while the brisket cooks. :)

Thats the story of my life! It is my therapy too. And I need plenty of it.

Stick Burners Rule!!!!!!
I will admit that Stick Burning is for the BBQ Purist at heart!!
It takes a little practice to get the right fire, keep the temps constant and feed that fire at the right time until the cook is done.
It isn't for everybody. That's why they make all those set and forget little thingys!!!!
I would sell it and just go to McDonalds for some of those wonderful Jack 'O Ribs they sell.
Sorry, I freaked out.

The solution here seems simple. Keep the Bandera and buy an Egg too. It's the Brethren way. Check out our signature lines. Most of us have way more than one cooker. More is better. Then later on, buy yourself a Trager too so you have a peller pooper too for all night no fuss, set it and forget it burns. :icon_cool

Learned thru my BSKD as well. It almost kicked my butt (not a pleasant thing) and the only thing that kept me from throwing it out was this forum. Learned through the guidance, patience, and methods of better fire management and modified by those who has learned before myself.

It is my best fire-breathing beast.

Keep the Bandera and eventually buy a BGE (or Grill Dome) - that's what I'm gonna do. I arrived at my decision via deep thoughts fueled by a couple of beers last evening.

Atta Boy, welcome to the club. :icon_cool

May be kind of late to get in the thread, but it took me about 8 burns to get to where I was only checking the temp every few hours; but I am the guy who likes tending fire, gives me a chance to hang outside and dring more BEER (Its part of the tending process)!!!!!!!!!!!! I did all the mods and now use charcoal to start and then its all logs after that, i am able to chop the wood into pieces that last 2 hours a piece (Its my OCD)....With all that being said, keep it and do not concede defeat, the more you work with it the better you will be and the more appreciation for the food you will have, just my opinion though

Cupie doll!!

Well, chit!

I was jacking around with my Bandera today. Turns out the cook chamber door hinges were frozen, so I sprayed some oil into'em. They loosened up a bit, but I musta yanked too hard - one of the hinge welds broke. Now the door is hanging on one hinge.

Looks like I have some work to do...

ok, now that officially sucks.

u have a welder?? Or access to one? Or someone that can do it? A rack of ribs or 2 goes a long way when bartering. :)

If you have to take it to a welder, find someone you can pay in Q or beer. Thats what I did. My Dera had a bad case of rust. So where ever we cut out metal, we replaced with 1/4" plate. Beefed it up mod. Nice. The more metal you have to hold temp, the better.

Devoted stick burner that I am, and always will be, I've found it's not for everyone. You either love them or hate them. If you find you'd rather not cook at all then use the Dera then move to another type of cooker and start having fun again. Try the mods first and sit back and enjoy the ride. It's really an exercise in relaxation.
