While I cannot say that I have been there personally, I would recommend Whole Hog Cafe. I have gone to the Conway restaurant (it is an AR chain started in Little Rock, and featured in Peace, Love, and BBQ). For more local places, there is the Pink Flamingo on Old Greenwood, which was the best when I lived there, and Jerry Neels, which I didn't like. There are a couple more in town, but I only went to another that I didn't remember and disliked anyway.

I believe the owner of Pink Flamingoes used to compete, not sure of the name. He has a decent collection of trophies out, and I believe he is from the Lawrence, KS area as he has some KU memorabilia up. All in all, it was my favorite place to go in FTS, however when I would drive through Conway for work, I would make my crew stop at Whole Hog. Their potato salad was the best I had ever had.

Well, the Flamingo is closed on Mondays so it was lunch at the Whole Hog yesterday.

Good Q. File this one away for your next visit to Ft Smith. I had a combo platter with baby backs, pulled pork and sliced brisket while Jean had a half chicken. There were seven house sauces to try (we tried them all) and they were VERY good. If you go and you're a chilihead do try the 'volcano' sauce. It'll light you up.

The ribs were really, really good. Slightly overdone by comp standards, 'cause a little more than the bite came off, but the bones stayed in and the rub was a good one. They'd basted with sauce at one point, but didn't use very much of it. Nice combo.

The brisket was flavorful, but not as tender as it could have been. I didn't ding it too much, though.

The pulled pork was a little dry, but had good flavor as well. Sauced it was just right.

The chicken was probably the best, next to the ribs. Done all the way through with a nice pink color and great flavor. The skin was still golden brown and had a little crunch.

Sides were beans (QUITE good), cole slaw (equally good) and a potato salad that we were taste-dissecting as we ate. It had sour cream in it, which was different but good.

All in all a good experience!

Aww man! I wish I had caught this thread earlier! I'd love to catch up with you Arlin!

We have a Whole Hog here in Fayetteville too. Good que! Probably my favorite in the area.

Also we have Penguin Ed's which has nice brisket and a new place that just opened a few months back called Sassy's Red House. They have good ribs and their Pulled Pork is usually right on!

Next time you get in the area drop me a line! I'd love to meet ya!

Arlin, I don't know this for sure but, I've heard the tater salad is a standard Sysco item. Several BBQ joints in AR use it or the same recipe.
