Been trying to gather as much info as possible since I'm new to this style cooker and currently building one. One of the videos I came across and, cant seem to find again, had a metal sleeve basically that the fire box sat in. Majority of the videos I've found don't seem to run that set-up so I'm curious what you guys prefer and if that's recommended or not? I personally feel like I need it but wanted feedback from the experts. Thanks in advance.

An expanded metal basket elevated off of the bottom with an ash pan below provides the best airflow, a deflector above that if you so desire.

What type of smoker ? Why would it need a sleeve around the fire box/basket ? Insulating the walls of an offset fire box or an insulated cabinet smoker - Yes - but inside of a cooker - No.

My Gateway drum has one.
Two reasons why.
Concentrate the fresh air draw directly to the fire basket and protect the paint on the drum from burning off.

Anyway you could send me a picture and or specs of it? I'm 99% sure this is the route I want to go.
