Excessive ash with Cowboy Lump

I recently bought a bag of cowboy lump, and although it lights and cooks well, I’m getting a lot of ash. To the point that when I open the lid to my kettle, ash flies everywhere.
I always clean out the ash in my kettle before a cook, so the ash is only what’s accumulating on the coals...
I’ve never had this issue with RO or KBB...anybody else have this issue?
