Wife, dog Ruby and I went to the Soo for Engineers Day.
They open the Soo Locks one day a year where you can walk across the lock gates.

We camped on the St. Mary's River at a campground. View from our campsite.

View from the lock gate, 1000 ft. Edwin H. Gott coming into the lock to drop down 21 ft to the St. Mary's River.
Per the deckhand it was carrying taconite pellets headed to the steel mill in Gary Indiana. It got its cargo out of Duluth Minnesota.

Photo of the Gott locking down the Poe Lock, hard to get a good photo of this freighter as its so massive.
The freighter is 105 ft. wide in a lock that is 110 ft wide, pretty tight fight.

Edgar Speer downbound on St. Marys River, Dotty standing in front of it on the shore.

These freighters are so massive they displace a lot of water. The water level at the beach moved out probably 100 ft. as it passed by.

People were shocked when the water came rushing back in after it passed through.

Sugar Islander II weaves through the freighter traffic at Mission Point.
DSCN0158.jpg

They have six inch and a half hose lines cooling the middle of the freighter as the heat causes the fore and aft of the ship to flex down and it cracks the top deck.

Dotty at White Fish Point Lighthouse.

Freighter Presque Ille rounding White Fish Point. 20 miles north of this lighthouse is the location of the sunken Edmond Fitzgerald ship and its 29 lost souls.
There are hundreds of sunken ships in these waters.

We had a fun 6 days camping, rained every day but we stayed warm and dry and met some great boat nerds on our trip.
Thanks for looking.

Very cool Bull, I am always impressed with those freighters. I did not know about the cooling of the center deck, interesting.

Had the pleasure of being in town for the engineers weekend a couple of years ago. Really cool to see those massive ships and the way the locks raise and lower themselves.
