• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I need some suggestions. I'm smoking 3 racks of ribs for a pretty good sized get together tomorrow, but it's gonna rain all day. Anyone got any suggestions on how to keep the smoker dry?

Put the smoker under an easy -up. Just make certain the exhaust vent is not covered.
Even with your smoker covered your temps may very as well as your your cook times based upon 100% humidity. You should watch your cooker more closely, if you have not experienced these conditions before.

In the alternative, put on your rain coverups and deal with the rain.
Good luck
Merl

I would if I had a garage, but all I've got is a small uncovered back deck

I'd offer you my EZ-up canopy, but it's a bit of a drive!

What kind of cooker? Can you move it near a porch and hang a tarp from the eaves - or something like that? I use my WSM on the lanai/pool deck on rainy days.

It's a gas smoker. I'm kinda thinking about going that route. I've got a few tarps that would be large enough. I just gotta find some metal poles to hang them from the edge of the deck.

water will bleed the heat right off, so the tarps are the easiest way to go. If your using a bullet type smoker, a large box(like an appliance box) with holes cut in it or airflow works great, but thats gonna be hard to come by today.

what kind of smoker is it?

It's a vertical box smoker. It's got a vent on each side and a vent on top. If it's left uncovered, water will definitely fall into it. I better go look for some metal poles. Looks like the tarp is my best bet.

If you're just expecting a light rain, I wouldn't worry too much. Heavy rain or rain + wind, well now that's another story. In moderate rain (w/no wind) I've used the umbrella from my patio table to cover my WSM (which has a top vent) and everything turned out fine.
Let's all do a "no rain" dance for crow. :-D

for those backwoods type smokers, an umbrella works pretty good, and a moving blanket, or welders blanket keeps the heat in if its windy too.

you said you have a back porch. do you have a table umbrella thats what i use in light rain.

I think you said you have a gas smoker. If the smoker goes out try to turn off the gas ASAP. You don't want the gas to build up when you relight the thing. You don't want to blow you ass up. This is no joke!

I'm now searching for some metal poles to tie to the deck railing. If I can find some, I should be fine. So far Lowes and Home Depot are a bust. Gonna try some sports stores next.

I use a patio table umbrella with a real heavy stand to cover the smoker when it rains. Works well.

Unfortunately, I don't have an umbrella either. This summer, I'm definitely getting a retractable awning installed over the back deck.

Ok, it ain't pretty, but here's my MacGuyver style canopy. I have about 6ft from deck floor to tarp. I hop it's tall enough to keep the heat from the smoker from melting the tarp. I raided the entire house for anything I could find to put it up. Heh, sure hope the wife doesn't have to mop or sweep tonight.
