Hello everyone, Question for all of you. I have been using Head country dry rub for years and just love it. What are some other good rubs to try ? Mainly on pork ribs
Big Brother Smoke, Steph, ( a member here) makes Simply Marvelous in several different flavors. They my favorite over the counter. I also make one I'm partial to.
That's a HUGE question. A lot of us have cabinets full of rubs and there are a lot of great ones available locally. You might run out to Bass Pro and see what they have. Todd (Plowboy) has his Yardbird and Bovine Bold out there, and if you go clear across town to one of the Beef Jerky Emporiums you can find a BUNCH more rubs to try. We like John Henry's stuff on pork, but that's just one example.
I really enjoy Texas BBQ Rub "Texas Wild" on ribs. The original is great too if I want things a bit more spicy. When I use the Wild I often sift out the larger chunks of onion flake for a smoother appearance, but that's just me. www.texasbbqrub.com
For some, it seems the talk of commercial rubs can get as controversial as religion or politics as people's tastes seem to vary as much as anything else. However, mainly for ribs and without mods, I would tend to lean towards The Slabs Kyle Style or Plowboys Bovine Bold. I have a hard time differentiating those two rubs and it gives a little something that is subtle but different.
For ribs I really like Plowboys rubs but there's lots of rubs out there to try yet. I also like a simple rub of salt, pepper and granulated garlic on everything.
Plowboy's Yardbird has been a great chicken, rib and butt rub for me for a few years now, I worked myself dow to it a couple years back after sampling a whole bunch of things and working down to some favs. I also like Smokin' Guns Hot for Burnt Ends (I use my own layered type rubs/seasonings for the brisket).
I have recently begun stocking up on more rubs to compare again, you know, to keep up with the times and all, so my faves could change before too long after all the comparisons.
I use my own rubs a lot because I'm getting very happy with them (except the burnt ends always get the Smokin' Guns), but I really do always have Plowboys Yardbird on hand and use it a lot which says a lot about how good it is.
I make my own:
1T Sea Salt
1T Granulated Garlic
2t Smoked Black Pepper
.5T Granulated Onion
.5T Chipotle Powder
.5T Ancho Chili Powder
.5T Dark Brown Sugar
.5T Smoked Hot Paprika
1t Cayenne
1t Turmeric
.5t Ground Cloves
This makes enough for a brisket and a butt or a butt and a couple slabs of ribs or a couple of chickens and some grilled veggies... you get the idea.
There are so many great rubs out there that are worth trying. I like Plowboys, Simply Marvelous's, and Spicewine's in particular. I am constantly testing different ones in an effort to improve my product. My wife says I have a problem since I keep buying more rubs since I already have a cabinet full...
A few of our brothers here have an online bbq supply store which offer the above rubs as well as several others. http://www.greatlakesbbqsupply.com/
My local purveyor always has 7-10 rubs opened and available to taste. Stopped in today and tried 5-6. If you can find a place to do that you'll quickly find what you like. I like to always compare my favs back to back with new ones. In my short time doing this I keep liking the Dizzy Pig and Plowboys. I did however get some Rufus Teague tonight to try.
