• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I have the opportunity to get 3 almost new, intact 55 gallon drums for free from the local freecyclers group.

I was told that they contained new oil - motor oil I would guess.

Do they sound like good candidates for UDSs?

sounds like you have a few days of burning ahead. Hopefully it will be incident free.....

Now, in terms of beers that will be sacrificed, how long to burn? Is this a oner, sixer, twelver, or what?

OK - Am I the only one the would be a little concerned about a drum with motor oil? I know you can burn it, but what would fire and motor oil leave behind? With all the additives in motor oil, the porous metal of the drum and heat, I would be worried about something there I might not want in my food! Just my .02 worth.

Good point. I'm doing a little research to see if there may be other alternatives to burning. That would seem to be the easiest and cheapest, but if there's something safer that's also practical I'd like to be able to choose from the available options.

Well, i don't have the info handy but have been told by several metal specialist's that metal does NOT have pore's, it does not act like a sponge, if you disagree, i will search for the info for you but this is what i have learned...

Anyone ever consider using some acetone? It is a great petroleum solvent. Wipe/rinse the innards down real well. Dump the acetone and let barrels dry for a spell. (Wouldn't take long as acetone evaporates real fast.) Then burn. Acetone also burns well, so it might make getting the oil out easier.
Just a thought.

Mr. Kew el Steve, I'm firm believer in drinking plenty of beer and playing with fires in barrels. Or at least drinking beer while watching some one else burn out your barrel for you.

If that barrel was lined with that plastic chit, I wouldn't worry about the petroleum. Your gonna burn it all out anyways.

I would rather spend a few bucks and get New Drums that didn't have motor oil in them.

That's just me....

Ditto. No sense in messing around and risking it.................new, unlined barrel is the ticket.

Being a welding instructor from my experience metal does have pores , Think of a cast skillet when you season it or your smoker if they didnt have pores wouldnt be any use of seasoning them, But I think burning out a barrel or tank work fine . matter of fact I start burning out 2 air tanks today. Tomorrow I will power was them with a strong soap solution. They should be fine. P.S. NEVER USE A BARREL THAT HAD INSECTCIDE OR HERBSCIDE IN THEM
