• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Does anyone NOT cover their pit?

Just curious, do any of you not cover your pit? I.e. no tarps, sheds, enclosures, etc. If so do you have any rust problems? I will be getting a GatorPit BYCC in the not too distant future and have built a shed with a lean too attached. The pit will be under the lean too. Last night we had our first really good rain since the shed was built and I sat out there during the storm. While rain didn't directly fall on the area where the pit will end up, some mist did float in during some the windy parts of the storm.

Should I worry about this or will the pit be OK? For aesthetics I would rather not put a tarp over the pit. While sitting out in the storm I was thinking I could put up some lattice work to impede the mist.

I keep a tarp over my BSKD... most of the time (but it looks like chit in the backyard). I have covers made specifically by Weber for my WSM and Kettle. My Spicewine stays in the garage in the air conditioning!

I don't cover mine. I cover ME when the weather sucks, but I don't cover the iron. I PAM the outside regularly, and she's about due for a repaint of the firebox, after two years.

i dont cover them either, unless they are decommissioned.. like arlin, i spray them down often with pam, usually before i dook a cook and that keeps the outside well seasoned and water pretthy much beads up and runs off..

Fireboxes, another story, no one wins that battle.. I have to repaint no matter what.. wire brush once a year at the beginning of the season and give it 2-3 coats.., and a light recoat at the end.. thats heat doing that, not rain..

No coverhere in Texas either. Of course not much rain either.

Have a cover for the WSM but I don't use it. I can not remember the last time it rained here, so the environment is not a problem.

does a pit covered in bird $hit count?

I agree on the once a year firebox routine. My pit was in the open since October and besides the firebox rusting I hated water in my pit, but rust and the main section was never a problem. Don't worry about the pit when it's in the shed the paint on the main section is thick and very durable.

I currently don't cover mine. I had a cover for the bandera, but it blew off and I haven't found it. I've got some rust building up on the firebox, but nothing on the pit.

Instead of lattice you might check the garden center for some sunscreen. We put some of that up around a balcony my grandparents had and it worked great!

What SPF do you recommend?

no cover here.. fixin to get it sandblasted and repainted for about 300 bucks. then i will start to season it more regularly.

You might be a brethren if...

You sit outside in the rain to see if your new pit will get wet!

:-D :-D :-D

The BYC sleeps inside. Heck, even the hibachi sleeps inside.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I won't have to worry about the pit. I figured I would have to paint the firebox every now and then. During the main season I will keep the firebox coated with oil to help it make it between paintings.

My wife thought I was nuts!!!

i have painted the smoke chambers once in 4 years with the BYC... they hold up fine.. never rusted .... I only painted it to make it look nicer for competitions after seeing a few pictures.

I have a cover for my chargriller but I always forget to use it.

Mine stays in a climate-controlled garage with a dust and allergen filter system along with an moisture/condensation control system that is monitored at a remote site 24 hours per day. Static electricity is deterred by a grounding system and a state-of-the-art burglar alarm, razor wire and roving guard dogs ensure nothing unsavory happens to my baby.

Rust? I think not.

Ken (very protective of his pit)
