OK my plan was to grill chicken, corn, eggplant, zukes, and burgers for dinner. I used briquetttes (I'm ready to shell out for lump for grilling -- I get it now). My plan was to direct grill the chix and move it indirect, indirect the corn (in the husk), direct cook the veggies and keep warm indirect, then finish with burgers direct. I fired up one full chimney of coals for the project and it was clearly not enough. So let's say I did the same grill again, this time with lump .Could I lay out a bed of cold lump on the side of the kettle and top it with a chimney of hot lump for a longer burn? BTW the food turned out ok but it was more roasted than grilled.
 
I'll let the experts answer for sure, but I haver had to add to a grill fire, and I have started using Lump for the add. Seems to smoke less while firing up.

So, I would assume pre-adding it should be OK
 
I use lump Cameraman and putting down a cold layer with the hot on top will work for you. Did it that way last weekend with two kettles to cook about 100 fund-raiser cheeseburgers. Direct to char and then indirect to melt the cheese. Had coals left over after 3 hours.
 
Webber kettle? Get a grate with lift up wings as as needed. Remember spin grate rather than rotate(shift) food is much easier.

I just hook up the next propane tank and turn the valve:)

This really has nothing to do with lump vs. Briquettes. It's all about the amount of fuel. One chimney just wasn't enough. Do as you suggested and make a pile on one side of the kettle and add the lit on top. This works for both lump and briquettes.
 
If you want to add unlit briquettes it works fine if you use a briquette that is mostly charcoal (Wicked Good, Kingsford Competition) The blue bag stuff has chemicals you don't want burned off during a cook, so if you have to use those, light up first.

Adding unlit lump works fine, especially if you can move all the lit coals to one side and add unlit next to it. When I compete I have to keep a fire running for hours, do this all the time.
 
Thanks for your input. Any criticism on my sequence for adding meats and veggies to the grill? Was I trying to cook too many unlike foods together?
