• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Wondering what some of you have found taking up residence in your wood pile. Found these 2 beauties while cooking some ribs over the weekend. They were totally non aggressive but needless to say I'm getting a pair of nice welding gloves before my next cook....especially since a lot of my cooking starts off at night......:mrgreen::mrgreen:

When I had my Lang I would find plenty of snakes and bugs. Didn't mind the bugs but the moccasins I didn't like. I kept my wood stacked up against a shed so that didn't help.

My stack is about 6 inches away from the building by about 12 feet long and 6 inches off the ground. I get prenty of spiders but no snakes since they don't have a place to curl up. The only other critters I get sometimes are boring bees. They just don't know how to live it up, I guesss...lol.

Plenty of black widows around my house, but I have yet to find any in my woodshed.

On Labor Day weekend I fired up my stick burner for the first time in a while. The Firebox on my pit was FULL of roaches and geckos. Once I got a fire going in there they vacated quick.

i find lots of lizards and a few spiders. i try to wear gloves if i am digging around further than the top layer.

Never actually found a creature, but plenty of vol droppings. That's how I figured out I had a problem in my back yard. First clue.

Man....... Great now you just made me the most paranoid person trying to go get a piece of wood for the smoker! Doesn't help I'm cooking today!! Guess I'm taking my time grabbing a piece of wood. LOL

Actually I have a few spiders in my wood shed, and a land crab. Other than that I haven't seen much. I love my wood shed!

When I had a homemade wood crib with pallets as the floor, I had chipmunks and plenty of creepy crawlies. Even had a woodchuck and a skunk under it (at different time). Now that I've bought commercial metal racks which keep the wood about 6in up from the ground. I don't see much in the way of critters.

At my parents house in upstate NY, the woodpile is a haven for snakes (all non-venomous) you can't pull a split without seeing a pile of shed skins.

I've always been careful when reaching for wood from a pile ever since I was a kid and heard of guy (in Westwood NJ I believe) who got bit by a copperhead that was in his woodpile (fortunately I'm fairly certain the guy lived). I've always had a phobia about woodpiles since then.

I always wear gloves when handling wood. It's just too easy to find critters in there. As for snakes, a good rub and spritz with #6 shot. Works every time.

Black widow. Not uncommon in Central California. They won't kill you (or so I've been lead to believe) but I hear their bites are quite painful. Fire kills all.

Matt

Lots a lizards, killed a wood rat in my temp pile today, plus all the expected bugs and spiders. I do think the lizards keep down the majority of insects though.
