Lowes in New Orleans has #10 Cowboy Lump on sale today and tomorrow (6/28-6/29) for $5.99, regularly $9.99.

I know that it is not the best lump out there, but it's a decent deal.

Cowboy Lump

Hi Thanks for heads up..Never used Cowboy Lump how does it compare to Royal Oak Lump?
Thanks DanB

GFS lump charcoal 20 lb.for $12.99, through the 4th . It's made by RO.

I would rather buy Stubbs brand charcoal at Lowes it has a much better rating

I agree, but Stubbs is briquettes, not lump, so it's not apple-to-apples with Cowboy.

BTW, Stubbs is also on sale until July 4. $5.99 for a 14 lb. bag instead of $9.99

True value in my neck of the woods has cowboy lump 20lb on sale for 9.99.. yay, I got plenty

Before Cowboy Lump was pretty bad. But over the last 2-3 years they really stepped their game up and are on par if not better than Royal Oak.

What I have noticed between Royal Oak and Cowboy over the last 2-3 years.

Royal Oak - More un-natural shaped pieces that resemble scrap wood or wood planks/ 1x1's etc. More dust and more foreign debris than before.

Cowboy Lump - Pieces are more natural looking wood chunks. Less dust and less foreign debris than Royal Oak.

I prefer to use Cowboy Lump over Royal Oak if they were priced the same. But they are close enough in quality, that I just go with whichever is cheapest at the time I buy it.

I was at Lowes yesterday and the Kingsford double bags are $19.99 with a free long stemmed lighter. Btw....I'm in NW Ohio

Madman uses Cowboy. If it's good enough for him it should be good enough for anybody.

Years ago Cowboy got a bad name using wood scraps. With a decrease in sales and lots of consumer complaints over a couple years; it forced them to change their product. I use Cowboy Lump and have used it for three years without any scrap, stones, or concrete. It's awesome stuff, but I do look for "Southern Style" I've heard others complain that some of the chunks of the lump are very large chunks of branches. I welcome this type of lump, it fits well in my insulated smoker and I just fit the smaller pieces around it. None the less, I would rather have larger pieces than the smaller pieces. Bottom line is that if one doesn't like large chunks of lump, it can be gently broken to size. But one can't fit smaller pieces together to make larger pieces.

I truly believe anyone complaining about Cowboy Lump using scrap hasn't used it in the past couple years. The stuff is great and when it's on sale you can't beat the price, so stock up on it. I use about 60 bags of this alone per year, and I also use some other brands charcoal if I run out.

An 8 pound load of Cowboy Lump will burn 12 to 14 hours leaving ample orange coals to add more charcoal in my insulated smoker. I've used Royal Oak and Frontier Lump when it's on sale, but I prefer the clean burning Cowboy. The large lump burns long with even heat and keep the smaller pieces burning with it.

I also use Cowboy Lump in the Weber when cooking steaks because it produces a great high heat, perfect for steaks.
